What is deck sales?

Deck sales refer to the process of selling outdoor decking materials and related products, such as wood, composite boards, railings, and accessories, to contractors, builders, and homeowners. Professionals in deck sales help customers choose the right materials for their projects, provide product information, and often coordinate delivery or installation services. The role may involve working for building supply companies, lumber yards, or specialty decking retailers, and requires knowledge of different decking materials, construction practices, and customer service skills.

What is the difference between Deck Sales vs Deck Installers?

AspectDeck SalesDeck Installers
Primary RoleSell and promote deck products, provide consultations, and generate leadsConstruct, assemble, and install decks on-site
Required SkillsCustomer service, sales techniques, product knowledgeCarpentry, construction skills, knowledge of tools and materials
Work EnvironmentOffice, showroom, or on-site sales meetingsConstruction sites, outdoor environments
CertificationsSales certifications optional; knowledge of building codes helpfulCarpentry or construction certifications often required

While Deck Sales professionals focus on selling and promoting decks, Deck Installers are responsible for the physical construction and installation of decks. Both roles are essential in the deck industry but require different skill sets and work environments.

How does a deck sales professional typically collaborate with contractors, homeowners, and suppliers during a project?

Deck Sales professionals act as key liaisons between clients (such as homeowners or builders), contractors, and suppliers throughout the sales and installation process. They consult with clients to understand project requirements, recommend suitable materials, and provide estimates. During the project, they coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and work closely with contractors to address any on-site issues or changes. This collaborative approach helps ensure projects run smoothly and clients are satisfied with the final result.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deck sales professional?

To thrive as a Deck Sales professional, you need a solid understanding of construction materials, sales techniques, and industry standards, often supported by experience in building products or related fields. Familiarity with CRM software, quoting systems, and digital design tools is commonly required to manage leads and provide accurate customer proposals. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills help you stand out in engaging clients and closing deals. These capabilities are crucial for effectively matching customer needs with the right solutions and driving business growth in a competitive market.

At Excel Custom Decks, we don’t just build beautiful outdoor spaces—we build careers, teams, and lasting legacies.

You’ll love working here if you value doing work that matters with people who push each other to grow. This is a place where your ideas are valued, your development is a priority, and your ability to connect with homeowners turns visions into outdoor spaces that change the way families live.

We provide everything you need to succeed, from a company vehicle, phone, laptop, and tablet, to qualified leads each week, to a proven sales system that helps you serve clients with confidence. You won’t be left to figure it out on your own, we’ll walk with you, coach you, and challenge you to get better every step of the way.

We’re a team of professionals who are committed to excellence, impact, and building something that outlasts us. If that resonates, keep reading.

Your Role

Every great outdoor space starts with a meaningful conversation. As a Deck Consultant at Legacy Decks, your job is to consult, educate, and guide homeowners through the design and investment process, helping them make confident decisions about their dream outdoor space.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Consult with clients to understand their outdoor space dreams and needs.
  • Present, promote, and sell products/services to prospective clients.
  • Outbound prospecting leads through cold calling, networking, and referrals.
  • Develop and maintain positive business and customer relationships.

Qualifications:

  • Proven sales experience.
  • Skilled & knowledgeable in technology and CRM tools preferred.
  • Highly motivated and target-driven, with a proven track record in sales.
  • Excellent selling, communication, and educational skills.

You'd be a great fit if you value:

  • Results: Are committed to meeting and exceeding sales targets.
  • Lifelong Learning: Continuously seek knowledge and improvement in your sales skills and product understanding.
  • Legacy Focused: Aim to create lasting, positive impacts on clients and the community.
  • Impacting Those Around You: Inspire and uplift teammates and clients with your dedication and professionalism.
  • Never Accept the Status Quo: Be proactive in seeking innovative solutions and approaches in your work.

This role isn’t for you if:

  • You are solely focused on short-term gains rather than building long-term relationships.
  • You are resistant to continuous learning and personal growth.
  • You are uncomfortable with a dynamic, fast-paced environment that values innovation.
  • You lack the motivation to achieve high standards and results consistently.
  • You prefer to work alone rather than as part of a collaborative team.

Why join Excel Custom Decks?

  • Competitive Compensation with Commission: We offer a rewarding pay structure that values your hard work and success.
  • Opportunities for Career Advancement: We believe in promoting from within and providing paths for your professional growth.
  • Dynamic and Supportive Company Culture: Be part of a team that fosters a positive, inclusive, and innovative work environment.
  • Commitment to Personal Development: Take advantage of ongoing training and development programs that ensure you are always at the top of your game.
  • Making a Difference: Contribute to transforming outdoor spaces that enhance our clients' lifestyles and create lasting memories.
  • Strong Team Spirit: Work with a close-knit team that supports each other and celebrates successes together.
  • Focus on Work-Life Balance: We value your personal time and well-being, offering flexible work arrangements when possible.
