SUMMARY:

The Civil Utility Skilled Laborer position will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of utility (water, sewage, and drainage systems) installation and maintenance projects. The role involves ensuring all pipes are accurately installed to the plans and specifications for each project.

Our search is currently limited to qualified candidates living within the Hampton Roads commuting area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform a variety of construction-related tasks under the direction of the Foreman. Tasks include, but are not limited to, heavy lifting, digging, cleaning equipment, and preparing construction sites to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Assemble, connect, and construct pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials.
  • Maintain visual and audible contact with other crew members and all moving or stationary persons, vehicles, or objects to ensure safe coordination of movement.
  • Dig trenches, backfill excavations, compact and level earth to grade specifications using shovels, picks, rakes, compactors, etc.
  • Operate construction tools and equipment such as power tools, rollers, and skid loaders.
  • Flagging traffic near, around, and in work zones.
  • Load, unload, transport, and stage construction materials, equipment, and tools.
  • Assist with excavation, underground utilities, concrete work, and general site preparation duties.
  • Perform job site clean-up and debris removal to maintain a safe and organized work area.
  • Follow all job, company, and OSHA safety guidelines and protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Work cooperatively with other crew members and take direction from the foreman or superintendent.
  • Attend required safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Ability to read and use tape measures.
  • Must be able to work in a COLD or HOT environment.
  • Maintain professional interaction with all customers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Must reside within commuting distance of our main office in Virginia Beach, VA.
  • This is an in-person, on-site position.
  • NEED TO BE ABLE TO OBTAIN BASE ACCESS FOR ONGOING PROJECTS!

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior experience in the utility construction industry or general construction.
  • Experience and knowledge of construction means and methods and understanding of the utility industry trades, installation, maintenance, and practices - specifically underground utilities such as water, sewage, and drainage systems.
  • Knowledge of positioning, joining, and aligning lines at proper depths, angles, and grades.
  • Basic knowledge and use of common hand tools required.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • Must be organized and have an eye for detail.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Ability to lift 50-100 lbs. regularly and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to perform job duties while standing, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working on ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and on sloped surfaces.
  • This position involves work at a construction site where duties will be performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Overtime may be required from time to time to meet project deadlines.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers.

SALARY:

  • Range: $18.00 - $26.00/hr
  • Negotiable - depending on experience.
  • Paid Weekly on Fridays (Mon thru Sun Work Week) w/ paystubs emailed.

BENEFITS:

  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance - Eligible after 30 Days, Enrolled on 1st of month - 50% of employee rate paid for employee for Health & Dental only.
  • 401(k) - w/ employer match up to 3% of annual income after (1) year of employment.
  • Paid Time Off (8 Days) - New Year, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, & Christmas + 2 additional days, usually utilized at Christmas and Thanksgiving
  • Earned Leave (Vacation/Sick) - 80 Total Hours Accrued Annually
    • Vacation (24 hours annually, accrued at 0.47 hours a week) - never expires, but caps at 24 hours.
    • Sick (up to 56 hours annually, accrued at 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked) - never expires, but caps at 56 hours.
  • Voluntary supplemental insurance options are available to employees at their own expense.
  • Voluntary life insurance is available to employees at their own expense.
