Job Description
The Senior Database Management Specialist is responsible for the design, development, administration, optimization, and support of complex enterprise database environments. This role supports large-scale data systems, cloud-based infrastructure, data integration initiatives, and enterprise applications. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in PostgreSQL, MongoDB, AWS cloud environments, ETL processes, database security, performance tuning, and large-scale data migrations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Database Architecture & Design
  • Design, develop, and maintain complex enterprise databases, data lakes, and data warehouses.
  • Architect database solutions including data modeling, schema design, normalization, indexing, partitioning, and replication.
  • Design and implement secure database architectures and access control strategies.
  • Develop and implement data migration strategies across environments including on-premise and cloud platforms.
Database Administration & Operations
  • Administer PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases including monitoring, backup and recovery, patch management, replication, and disaster recovery (DR).
  • Perform installation and maintenance of high-availability database environments.
  • Monitor production database activity including CPU, disk, memory, space utilization, and batch jobs.
  • Perform hands-on database maintenance including vacuum/full vacuum, analyze operations, and storage management.
  • Upgrade database servers and manage database storage infrastructure.
Performance Optimization & Security
  • Analyze and resolve database and application-tier performance issues.
  • Optimize SQL queries and NoSQL queries; create and manage indexes.
  • Implement database performance tuning and capacity planning strategies.
  • Conduct security hardening of databases including access controls, RBAC, OS configuration, encryption, and authorization mechanisms.
  • Evaluate security incidents and implement corrective actions.
Cloud & DevOps Support
  • Support applications hosted in AWS cloud environments including EC2 and related services.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure and application teams to automate end-to-end cloud operations.
  • Develop monitoring scripts and alerts to ensure service-level performance targets are met.
  • Participate in CI/CD processes using tools such as Jenkins, Bamboo, Maven, Bitbucket, Jira, and Git.
  • Contribute to deployment playbooks, batch sequencing, and system health monitoring.
Data Engineering & ETL
  • Design, develop, and support ETL processes to extract, transform, and load data across enterprise systems.
  • Build complex data extractions, queries, and reports.
  • Support large-volume database migration initiatives.
  • Implement data quality checks, validation rules, and governance controls.
  • Maintain metadata repositories and data dictionaries.
Testing & Integration
  • Provide data-related support for unit testing, load testing, integration testing, validation testing, and user acceptance testing.
  • Review and support database integrations to ensure operational and security compliance.
  • Support complex web applications, dashboards, and data-sharing initiatives.
Collaboration & Governance
  • Work closely with developers, analysts, and business stakeholders to align database environments with enterprise IT strategy.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum six (6) years of experience designing databases, queries, reports, and solutions for large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience building complex data extractions and databases using PostgreSQL, Informatica, and MongoDB.
  • Minimum four (4) years of PostgreSQL administration including patch management, complex SQL development, stored procedures, and data extractions.
  • Minimum four (4) years of hands-on database maintenance in production and lower environments.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience supporting cloud-based applications in AWS environments (EC2, CI/CD processes).
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience with DevOps tools such as Jenkins, Bamboo, Maven, Bitbucket, Jira, and Git.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in document management systems.
  • Minimum four (4) years of monitoring production database activities and batch jobs.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience supporting large-volume database migrations.
  • Strong understanding of database architecture principles including normalization, indexing, partitioning, replication, and high availability.
  • Experience in data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing.
  • Experience optimizing SQL queries and batch performance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting large-scale marketplace, eligibility, or health and human services systems.
  • Experience processing EDI transaction sets such as 834, 820, 999, 270/271.
  • Strong knowledge of disaster recovery planning and validation of backup/restore processes.
  • Experience implementing best practices and performance tuning strategies for PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases and analytics tools such as Tableau, QlikSense, or Power BI.
  • Experience with business rules engines and complex rule implementations.
  • Experience establishing data governance programs, compliance monitoring, and data quality frameworks.
  • Familiarity with integrated eligibility or large enterprise healthcare-related systems.
  • Experience working within structured project management and change control environments.
