RQ11214 - Sr. Database Administrator

9-month contract (170 business days) - possible extesnion

REMOTE - Anywhere in Ontario

Must Have:

  • Minimum 10+ years of hands-on experience as Database Analysis (other IT roles to be considered as part of years experience)
  • Creates and implements physical database designs and operates and administers the database management system (DBMS), including database optimization, capacity planning, installation and migration, database design, performance tuning, backup and recovery.
  • Database optimization, capacity planning, installation and migration, database design, performance tuning, backup and recovery.
  • Maintain and monitor a number of Oracle 10g,11g,12c,19c databases in large multi-tenant environments including database administration, maintenance, optimization, migration, and fine tuning of databases
  • Design, build and configure Oracle Database Servers on Windows, Solaris, Linux
  • Lead and design solutions for the enterprise Oracle migration project to migrate to 19c or higher
  • Carry out complex/specialized systems analysis and design for success of Oracle migration

Description:

The Solaris Evergreening project will:

  • Transition Solaris impacted application databases off of Solaris infrastructure and onto supported infrastructure.
  • Where applicable/compatible, upgrade to latest version of Oracle database software.
  • Eliminate security and financial risks by decommissioning out-of-support Solaris infrastructure following successful migrations.

The applications in scope will remain 'as is,' there will be no new development work completed. The migration off of Solaris operating system servers only impacts the operating system and database.

The project represents a time-sensitive, high-priority stream within FY26/27 operating plan deliverables and serves as a key enabler for broader portfolio modernization.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates and implements physical database designs and operates and administers the database management system (DBMS) including database optimization, capacity planning, installation and migration, database design, performance tuning, backup and recovery.
  • Database optimization, capacity planning, installation and migration, database design, performance tuning, backup and recovery.
  • Maintain and monitor a number of Oracle 10g,11g,12c,19c databases in large multi-tenant environments including database administration, maintenance, optimization, migration, and fine tuning of databases
  • Design, build and configure Oracle Database Servers on Windows, Solaris, Linux
  • Ensure existing databases meet performance requirements including but not limited to SIEBEL, Java, ARCGIS, APEX databases on Oracle
  • Ensure that all deployed databases are secure and that appropriate security and auditing controls are in place to meet security and privacy requirements
  • Provide database administration technical expertise during design and architecture phases of new solutions
  • Lead and design solutions for enterprise Oracle migration project to migrate to 19c or higher
  • Plan, manage and coordinate implementation of technically advanced complex systems and assist in Data refreshes to lower non production environment
  • Provide regular support to resolve complex and unique database management issues
  • Provide expert support and guidance to production database systems and clients by overseeing the deployment and evaluation of complex Oracle databases
  • Provide support and maintenance of databases in GoCloud and on premise based environments
  • Carry out complex/specialized systems analysis and design for success of Oracle migration
  • Provide assistance in the implementing, TDE, Dataguard, RAC, OMS, OEM 13c
  • Provide assistance with replicated database management and migration
  • Documentation of your technical work such that knowledge can be transferred to you colleagues
  • Identifies, analyses, prioritizes and communicates technical risks for decision makers
  • Provides recommendations and mitigation strategies based on a detailed evaluation of technical risks and issues
  • Communicates effectively to identify needs and evaluate solutions to complex business and technical issues

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 10+ years experience as Database Analysis (other IT roles to be considered as part of years experience)
  • Experience with one or more operating systems
  • Experience with one or more database technologies
  • Experience in one or more programming languages Experience in the use of information retrieval packages and proficiency with query languages
  • Experience in monitoring and enforcing database rules
  • Experience in Incident, Change and Configuration Management procedures
  • Experience with one or more communications protocols
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills; verbal and written communication skills; and interpersonal skills
  • A team player with a track record for meeting deadlines

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with distributed data systems
  • Experience with middleware and gateways
  • Experience with researching and implementing cyber security vulnerability remediation's
  • Awareness of emerging IT trends and directions
  • Experience with Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools

  • Additional Responsibilities/Skills for Data Warehouse including Oracle OBIEE
  • Subject matter expert in database design of the data warehouse or data marts.
  • Experience and expert knowledge in technology and/or application required including installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrade (technology stack) and cloning
  • Additional Skills for Case Management and ERP Experience in designing/developing an automated data distribution mechanism
  • Knowledge and understanding of object-oriented analysis and design techniques.
  • Experience in developing enterprise architecture deliverables (e.g. models)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ontario Government Enterprise Architecture processes and practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of Information Management principles, concepts, policies and practices
  • Experience in impact analysis, implementation planning and implementation of technology or suite specific patches, maintenance packs and releases, and technology stack patch sets and releases
  • Experience in technical design, planning and implementation of specific technology or suite
  • Experience with database administration and vendor support services
