About the Role


Polar Asset Management Partners is an alternative asset manager established in 1991 and headquartered in Toronto. With teams in Canada, US, and the UK, managing strategies across equities, credit, commodities, rates and niche strategies we are committed to generating strong risk-adjusted returns.

Our Technology Team at Polar is seeking an Intermediate Database Administrator to support systems running on Microsoft SQL Server, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, and other database technologies across on-premises and cloud environments. You will help operate, improve, and evolve critical database components that power our trading and analytics platforms. You'll partner closely with developers and data scientists to deliver high-performance, reliable, and scalable data systems for the investment team.

What You Will Do:

  • Monitor database health and performance, and forecast resource utilization to support capacity planning and cost optimization
  • Manage user access, roles, and security policies, following least-privilege and audit requirements
  • Investigate and resolve performance issues, including query tuning, indexing, and execution plan analysis
  • Support backup/restore and operational maintenance; assist with reliability and recoverability practices
  • Automate and improve auditing, monitoring, and deployment of database changes
  • Maintain schema documentation and help enforce database standards and conventions
  • Collaborate with engineering and other team members on database-related tasks and production support

Who You Are:

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with a relational database in a production environment (Postgres, Databricks, Snowflake, SQL Server, Oracle, etc.)
  • Strong T-SQL skills (queries, stored procedures, views, indexes, query tuning)
  • Good understanding of database normalization, indexing strategies, and transaction isolation
  • Python programming skills, with ability to read code to understand how it interacts with the database and help diagnose production issues
  • Familiarity with Windows Server, basic networking concepts, and monitoring tools
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with automation frameworks, simple REST APIs, or ETL tools is a plus
  • Experience in financial services is a plus

Location: Toronto, ON, 4 days/week in office

Compensation: Polar's total compensation package includes base salary, discretionary performance bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package. In accordance with Ontario's Employment Standards Act, 2000, the estimated base salary range for this position is $80,000 to $100,000. The actual base salary pay will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to, the individual's experience level, the qualifications they bring to the role, business needs, and market demands.
