Westat is seeking a Data Visualization Analyst to join our Statistics and Data Science Center. The position involves the design, development, and delivery of interactive data visualizations and reporting solutions using Tableau and Power BI, and data manipulation using R, Python, and SQL.
This role is based out of Bethesda, Maryland and will be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement requiring 1-2 days onsite each week.
As part of the interview process, candidates will be asked to provide a portfolio sample showcasing their data visualization experience.
Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop data visualizations and dashboards using open-source libraries in R and Python and proprietary software such as Tableau and Power BI.
  • Develop R and Python code for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Develop SQL code to query and process data files in databases.
  • Translate business requirements into intuitive dashboard layouts and visual analytics products.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for dashboards, reporting workflows, and data sources.
  • Review and provide feedback on data visualizations developed by team members, ensuring compliance with accessibility requirements, UI/UX standards, and effective data visualization principles.
  • Proactively communicate with project team members and clients on the design, development, and deployment of dashboards and data visualizations, ensuring ongoing and effective communication.
  • Present to internal and external clients.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance, requiring consistent U.S. residency for the majority of the last five years.
  • A bachelor's degree in data visualization, information design, graphical design, data science, computer science, statistics, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in data visualization or business intelligence.
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau and Power BI) and a demonstrated understanding of data analysis techniques.
  • Experience with R, Python, and SQL for data manipulation.
  • Demonstrated design skills with knowledge of UI/UX best practices and the ability to create clear, actionable visual insights.
  • Developed, queried, and managed large data files in databases.
  • Proven experience using Git as version control system.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a professional services research environment.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and experience in developing actionable insights from complex data.
  • Interest in learning data science and artificial intelligence (AI) methods (e.g., natural language processing and machine learning methods, and large language models).
  • Commitment to staying current with emerging trends and technologies in data visualization and analytics.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills for presenting technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including time management, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and work both independently and in a team environment.
