What is a data steward?

A data steward’s primary responsibility is to ensure data quality for an organization. In this job, your duties include documenting data and metadata, determining procedures for data interpretation, and working closely with other data analysts and managers to ensure that data is uniform for internal and external users. The qualifications for this career include a bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer science, or a closely related field. You also need several years of related job experience, for example, in data storage or extraction. It’s also helpful to have programming expertise and technical writing skills.

What are the typical challenges faced by data stewards when ensuring data quality across multiple departments?

Data Stewards often encounter challenges related to inconsistent data standards and varying data management practices across departments. Coordinating with different teams to align on data definitions, formats, and quality expectations can be complex, especially in large organizations. Additionally, they may need to address resistance to change or limited data literacy among colleagues, requiring effective communication and training. Successful Data Stewards proactively foster collaboration and advocate for standardized data governance processes to overcome these hurdles and maintain high data quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data steward, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Steward, you need a solid understanding of data management principles, data governance frameworks, and strong analytical skills, often supported by a degree in information systems or a related field. Familiarity with data quality tools, metadata management systems, and industry standards like GDPR or HIPAA compliance is typically essential. Attention to detail, strong communication, and stakeholder management skills help Data Stewards effectively enforce data policies and collaborate across departments. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining data integrity, ensuring compliance, and enabling data-driven decision-making within organizations.

Job description

Description

Who We Are

Thread Bank is a digital-first financial technology community bank that aims to enhance customer engagement through innovative solutions. Thread Bank offers a modern website, a CRM system, and a mobile app to simplify banking for businesses and individuals. Our embedded banking solution helps

business technology platforms provide secure banking experiences. We also partner with other banks, credit unions, and FinTechs to integrate compliant financial solutions. Thread Bank values innovation, collaboration, and flexibility, offering excellent benefits and a family-friendly culture.

What We Are Looking For

The Data Governance Analyst executes the day to day work of Thread Bank's data governance program. This role keeps the Bank's data catalog accurate and current, produces the data quality reporting the Enterprise Data Governance Council relies on, and maintains the classification, ownership, and

retention documentation that supports GLBA and other regulatory obligations. The Analyst serves as the program's working steward of the catalog and as the primary support to the Enterprise Data Governance Council. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, curious about how data moves through a bank, exercises sound judgment, and handles sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion.

What You'll Do

Catalog and Metadata

? Maintain the Bank's key data element register and business glossary in the enterprise data catalog, including definitions, classifications, and regulatory tags.

? Keep data owner, data steward, and technical owner assignments current in the catalog as the organization changes, and onboard new owners and stewards to their responsibilities.

? Maintain data classification documentation and data inventories across the Bank's systems of record and reconcile them to the catalog.

? Review data lineage and metadata propagation for completeness and accuracy, log defects, and work with Data Engineering to resolve them.

Data Quality and Issue Management

? Produce the monthly data quality dashboard and the quarterly Enterprise Data Governance Council metrics pack.

? Monitor data quality checks, triage failures, route them to the responsible steward, and track resolution against agreed severity service levels.

? Maintain the data governance issue log, record defects found during review and follow remediation through to closure.

Governance Operations and Assurance

? Support the Enterprise Data Governance Council by building the materials pack, drafting decision memos, recording decisions and actions, and maintaining the decision register, including the ratification status of pending items.

? Support implementation of the Bank's data classification, retention, and information protection controls in Microsoft 365, then monitor adherence once those controls are live and escalate exceptions for resolution.

? Conduct and document periodic data governance assessments of bank systems, reviewing classification accuracy, retention compliance, and data handling practices against policy.

? Coordinate periodic access reviews of bank data systems with system owners, consolidate review outcomes, and track remediation of inappropriate access to closure.

? Collect and organize evidence for internal audits, external audits, and regulatory examinations, maintain control documentation, and track remediation of findings.

? Maintain clear documentation and runbooks for recurring tasks.? Coordinate day to day with Data Engineering, IT Operations, Information Security, and Compliance.

? Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by management or business needs.

Qualifications

Required

? 2 or more years of experience in data governance, data management, IT audit, governance, risk, and compliance (GRC), or a related role.

? Working knowledge of data governance concepts, including data classification, data ownership, retention, and access controls.

? Hands on experience with a data catalog, metadata management, or data governance platform, or a demonstrated ability to become the Bank's power user of one within the first 90 days.

? Ability to read a database schema and write basic SQL queries.

? General awareness of U.S. banking and financial services regulations, including GLBA, and a willingness to build deeper knowledge on the job.

? Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

? Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills.

? Must be detail oriented and have a high level of ownership and accuracy.

? Ability to work independently and with a team.

? Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel.

? Nashville based in-office position

Preferred

? Associate's degree preferred or equivalent work experience will be considered in place of a degree.

? Prior experience at a community bank, credit union, fintech, or other regulated financial institution.

? Familiarity with data management frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM, or similar bodies of knowledge.

? Experience with an enterprise data catalog such as DataHub, Collibra, Alation, or Microsoft Purview.

? Experience with Microsoft 365 governance, including sensitivity labels, retention labels, and data loss prevention.

? Experience working in cloud environments.
