What is a data engineer non profit?

A Data Engineer in a nonprofit organization is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining data systems that support the organization's mission. They collect, clean, and organize data from various sources, ensuring its accuracy and accessibility. This role involves developing data pipelines, optimizing databases, and supporting analytics to help the nonprofit make data-driven decisions. Unlike in corporate settings, nonprofit data engineers often work with limited resources and focus on impact-driven projects. Their work enables better donor engagement, fundraising efforts, and program evaluation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer non profit?

To thrive as a Data Engineer in the non-profit sector, you need a solid background in data management, ETL processes, and proficiency in languages such as SQL and Python, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills are essential to work effectively with non-technical staff and diverse stakeholders. These abilities are crucial for successfully building data infrastructure that supports mission-driven decision-making and maximizes the organization’s social impact.

What are some typical challenges a data engineer faces when working in a non-profit organization?

Data Engineers in non-profit organizations often encounter challenges such as integrating data from diverse and sometimes outdated sources, as well as working with limited budgets and resources compared to the private sector. You may need to develop scalable solutions that support evolving data needs while ensuring data security and compliance with donor or grant requirements. There is also a strong focus on collaborating with fundraising, program, and outreach teams to translate complex data into actionable insights. Adaptability and creativity are key to overcoming these obstacles and helping the organization leverage data to further its mission.

Job description

Title: Data Engineer

Location: Remote (EST hours preferred)

Duration: 4 Month Contract (through end of 2026)

Pay Range: $70-80/hour W2

Hours: 40 hours/week (EST)

Benefits: Eligible for Health, Dental, Vision, 401K

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. This position is not eligible for sponsorship.

We're looking for a mid-level Data Engineer to join our team during a critical migration and peak season period. This role supports Audience Management — the systems and data that power how we understand and reach our customers/donors across their full journey (email, SMS, direct mail, phone).

You'll join a migration already in progress, moving our legacy data warehouse (Azure MS SQL) into Databricks, which will become the underlying data source for a new segmentation tool we're implementing. Roughly half of our processes have already been migrated — you'll help complete the remaining work while also supporting day-to-day data list pulls during our year-end peak season.

Job Summary:

  • Support and help complete the migration of legacy MS SQL scripts/processes into Databricks

  • Build and maintain dbt models as part of the new Databricks-based data architecture

  • Support Data List pulls for audience segmentation during year-end peak volume

  • Partner with the existing team of 2 data engineers already embedded in the migration

  • Review and validate migrated processes/scripts in collaboration with vendors

  • Help Client the groundwork for a new segmentation tool (currently in procurement/early implementation)

  • Work with data that maps customer/donor journeys — email, SMS, direct mail, and call outreach — to support full 360-degree audience views

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4–7 years of hands-on data engineering experience
  • Must have recent experience in the nonprofit industry
  • Strong, solid coding skills with real hands-on experience — not just theoretical
  • Required: hands-on experience with Databricks, SQL, and dbt
  • Experience migrating data warehouses (e.g., legacy SQL environments into Databricks or similar) strongly preferred
  • Comfortable working within an existing architecture and picking up work already in progress alongside other engineers
  • AI-related certifications or experience a plus (e.g., Databricks Genie)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in nonprofit (NFP) organizations, particularly supporting audience management, donor journeys, or fundraising data

  • If no direct NFP background, experience supporting customer/donor journey data (understanding not just the mechanics but the purpose behind journeys — how organizations build and maintain relationships with their audience over time) is valuable. This kind of journey-based audience work exists across nearly every industry, so direct NFP experience isn't required.
