Job description

Position: Lead Engineer, External Data Analytics (Contract)
Mode: Contract - long term
Location: Remote
Tech Stack Grid:
Pending
Why this role matters
Join the team that powers real-time, mission-critical exam analytics across the College Board. You'll lead the design and delivery of secure, scalable analytics platforms and dashboards that serve both external stakeholders (districts & schools) and internal operations, security, and leadership teams, with reliability that holds up under peak exam traffic.
What you'll do
Lead engineering for an end-to-end analytics platform
  • Own technical direction and delivery of cloud-native data architectures, real-time telemetry pipelines, APIs, and high-performance analytics dashboards.
  • Partner closely with domain teams on data ingestion, data quality cleanup, security, and data integrity, then drive visualization on dashboards that scale seamlessly.
  • Embed observability/monitoring and operational readiness throughout the stack; design for scalability, availability, and reliability from day one.

Provide technical leadership (non-manager)
  • Serve as the technical anchor: guide complex design decisions, mentor engineers, and set high bars for code quality, automation, and performance.
  • Collaborate with product, operations, and security to align engineering with high-stakes exam readiness, capacity planning, and risk mitigation.

Support production during critical periods
  • Participate in hypercare/on-call support during administration seasons; jump in to triage and resolve production issues rapidly when needed.

What we're looking for (Required)
  • 7+ years designing, building, and operating scalable cloud-native applications, data pipelines, and analytics platforms in high-availability environments.
  • Full-stack delivery:
  • Front end: TypeScript + React (analytics dashboards/data-driven UIs).
  • Back end: Node.js (TypeScript preferred) and Python for APIs, event-driven services, and data processing.
  • Deep data engineering: design and run ingestion, transformation, and orchestration for real-time and near-real-time workloads; large-volume data experience.
  • ML/AI in production (now required): implemented ML/AI within analytics platforms (e.g., predictive models, anomaly detection, trend insights), including deployment/monitoring (SageMaker Studio or similar).
  • AWS expertise: Lambda, SNS/SQS, S3, Redshift, Athena, EMR, Glue, Step Functions, IAM/KMS, CloudWatch; S3 data lakes and performance tuning.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, AWS CDK/CloudFormation, AWS CLI.
  • Security & governance: RBAC, secure access patterns, tenant/data protection.
  • Observability & telemetry: experience with Grafana and InfluxDB (or similar).
  • Excellent communication, structured problem-solving, and a mission-driven mindset aligned with expanding educational opportunity; U.S. work authorization required.

Nice to have
  • Background building/operating analytics within SaaS and multi-tenant contexts.
  • Familiarity with cell-based architecture for isolation, fault containment, and horizontal scale.

Team & scope
This Lead Engineer sits in InfoSec & Infrastructure and drives the External Data Analytics platform-including an Operations Hub, Test Security dashboard, and end-to-end dashboards that unify data across domains for external and internal users. You'll coordinate closely with data ingestion teams and the architects/engineers guild while leading technology (not people management).
