Job description

Position Title: Security Guard
Location: Albany, NY
Grade/Classification: Hourly/Full Time
Salary Range: $19.36 - $24.94

Janitorial Services Assistants and Security Guards Negotiating Unit

Primary Purpose
Under the direct supervision of Building Services staff, the Security Guard serves as the first contact for employees and visitors who enter DASNY headquarters and is responsible for maintaining the overall safety and security by patrolling the premises, monitoring video surveillance, inspecting the building, and controlling access points.
Essential Functions
  • Perform security duties such as verification of identification badges, controlling the lobby area, monitoring the building security systems, patrolling the property (inside and external perimeter) and reporting any situations or problems to the proper authorities.
  • Receive visitors, verify proper identification of visitors, issue temporary visitor badges; enforce access control policies to prevent unauthorized visitors from accessing restricted areas, screen and refer callers; take and communicate messages promptly; answer routine inquiries.
  • Assist with building safety and security activities; conduct routine security monitoring inside the office and outside on the property.
  • Interact professionally with employees, clients, and visitors, offering assistance and information as needed while maintaining a strong security presence.
  • Receive incoming deliveries including Federal Express, UPS, and hand deliveries, and notify appropriate units or personnel for pick-up.
  • Log in bids received and coordinate the bid process with the Contracts Unit.
  • Type correspondence, memoranda, incident reports, etc.
  • Arrange messenger delivery as needed and maintain a log of deliveries sent and received.
  • Ensure compliance with DASNY security policies and procedures, DASNY's Visitor Policy and other applicable policies and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal regulations.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • May be called upon to perform additional duties in emergency situations, e.g., when DASNY facilities are affected by fire, severe weather or criminal acts.
  • Undertake special assignments as directed.
  • Must maintain regular attendance in accordance with DASNY attendance and leave policies.
  • Must adhere to the NYS Information Security Policy Standards established and issued by the Office of Information Technology Services. (Standards can be found on the Intranet).

Physical/Mental/Visual Demands
Requires exposure to weather and temperature extremes. Requires physical mobility (movement from place to place). Overtime or extended work hours may be required. Must be available to work a modified work schedule as required. Must be available to work shifts, as assigned, when the DASNY office is closed, but tenants of the building are open.
Work Environment
Standard office environment requiring daily, intermittent security rounds within the office and the external perimeter.
Minimum Qualifications
New York State Department of State (DOS) Security Guard Registration and six months of relevant experience. Ability to handle an extremely busy reception area, and patrol property (inside and external perimeter) in a variety of weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent plus three years experience as a Security Guard or three years performing relevant guard duties as a police officer, peace officer or military personnel. New York State Department of State (DOS) Security Guard Registration. Ability to handle an extremely busy reception area, patrol property (inside and external perimeter) in a variety of weather conditions and observe potential threats inside and outside. CPR/AED Certified and physically able to perform CPR and operate the AED.
Essential Skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in PC applications such as Outlook, Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint.
