Job description

Responsible for registration of patients, obtaining required information and legal signatures for treatment and billing of hospital services.   Communicates effectively and in a friendly and courteous manner with all patients, coworkers and visitors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Registers patients accurately and in a timely manner, making sure all information is correct, insurance is verified at the time of registration and all applicable signatures are obtained.
  • Ensures all incoming hospital telephone calls are promptly and courteously answered and directed to the appropriate person or department.
  • Interacts with patients and families, physicians and staff in a professional, positive and respectful manner.
  • Consistently demonstrates a positive attitude.
  • Fosters teamwork by offering assistance to others.
  • Arranges for the efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and the registration of outpatients.
  • Ensures that accurate patient information is collected and entered into the electronic medical record.
  • Verifies insurance benefits and eligibility.
  • Directs visitors to appropriate areas.
  • Monitors patient wait times both before and after registration, keeping them notified of any delays and waits.
  • Escorts patients or arranges for escort; explains hospital regulations, such as visiting hours, payment of accounts, and schedule of charges.
  • Participates in the collection process of co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles and current balances, handling funds per office procedure.
  • Arranges for patients to speak with a financial counselor if needed.
  • Compiles data for occupancy and census records if requested.
  • Protects patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and privacy laws
  • Ensures patient satisfaction, including troubleshooting when there is a complaint and developing process improvements to prevent reoccurrences.
  • Demonstrates clear ownership of workplace and patient safety.
  • Report mistakes, near misses, adverse events and quality and safety concerns.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of safety and quality improvement activities.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Job Requirements

Education: High School diploma/GED required

Licensure/Certification: Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) certification encouraged within 1 year of employment.

Experience:  Basic working knowledge of computers. Keyboarding skills required. Minimum of one year of office experience preferred, medical terminology preferred.  Previous experience in registration or admitting in a hospital preferred.  Exceptional customer service experience, good verbal and written communication and excellent interpersonal skills required. Understanding of health insurance and billing preferred. Must have attention to detail as well as ability to multitask and be accurate.
