PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Correction this class is accountable for either supervising correctional staff engaged in custodial work or for performing specialized assignments.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
\r\n\r\n Assists a Captain in supervising a large complement of officers on an assigned shift or as a shift supervisor;\r\n In absence of a Captain assumes responsibility for custody and security of inmates, building and grounds;\r\n Assigns personnel to posts and makes frequent inspections to evaluate performance of officers, effective manning of posts and enforcement of rules and regulations;\r\n Oversees staff in performing sensitive investigations and/or tactical operations as well as maintaining sensitive information;\r\n Responsible for responding to crisis situations in a supervisory capacity;\r\n Determines training needs for facility or facilities personnel;\r\n Performs administrative tasks necessary to ensure training is conducted;\r\n Conducts training sessions for personnel in facility and conducts training sessions for Maloney Center for Training and Staff Development;\r\n Assists in supervising inmate counts;\r\n Reviews and acts on reports submitted by officers and/or other departmental staff;\r\n Prepares and submits reports on operational/investigatory/tactical activities and supervises maintenance of reports and records on operations;\r\n Makes staff evaluations;\r\n Chairs disciplinary committee;\r\n May be responsible for transportation and guarding of inmates away from premises;\r\n May counsel inmates and staff;\r\n May assist in training new officers in procedures and regulations;\r\n May assist in updating post orders or unit directives;\r\n May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of experience in correctional work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in corrections, behavioral sciences or criminal justice may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n Experience working with justice involved juveniles or completion of academic or professional training in juvenile justice, social work, psychology, criminal justice, or related fields;\r\n Experience or coursework demonstrating knowledge of Restorative Justice practices;\r\n Experience facilitating restorative approaches into program operations or staff interactions when appropriate;\r\n Experience or coursework demonstrating knowledge of program auditing principles;\r\n Experience or coursework researching best practices in juvenile justice;\r\n Experience and/or relevant coursework communicating verbally and in writing to convey information clearly to diverse individuals or groups;\r\n Experience and/or coursework developing and facilitating programs; and\r\n Experience or coursework demonstrating knowledge of correctional policies and procedures, including familiarity with Connecticut Department of Correction Administrative Directives and their application in daily operations.\r\n\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license, a Commercial Driver's License, or both.\r\n\r\n\r\n
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
