Job description

M&T Bank is seeking a Head of Corporate Technology - Finance, Risk, Legal, Human Resources, and Corporate Functions. This executive leader will be responsible for defining and executing the technology vision, strategy, and delivery roadmap supporting some of the Bank's most critical enterprise functions. The Head of Corporate Technology will drive large-scale modernization, digital transformation, operational excellence, and technology innovation while ensuring the highest standards of regulatory compliance, risk management, resiliency, and governance.

The successful candidate will serve as a strategic partner to executive business leaders, influencing enterprise priorities while delivering technology solutions that enable growth, efficiency, control, and transparency across Finance, Risk, Legal, HR, and other corporate functions.

This role requires a transformative technology executive who combines strategic vision, operational leadership, and deep technical expertise. The ideal candidate must be equally comfortable shaping enterprise technology strategy and driving execution, with the ability to engage directly in complex architectural, engineering, modernization, data, AI, and platform-related challenges when needed. This is not a pure oversight role; success requires a leader who can influence at the executive level while maintaining the technical credibility to guide critical technology decisions and support resolution of complex delivery challenges.

Responsibilities Include

  • Define and execute the technology strategy for Finance, Risk, Legal, HR, and Corporate Functions in alignment with the Bank's enterprise objectives, technology roadmap, and transformation agenda.
  • Serve as the primary technology partner to senior business executives, providing strategic guidance on technology investments, capabilities, modernization opportunities, and business transformation initiatives.
  • Lead large-scale technology modernization and transformation programs, including cloud adoption, application modernization, process automation, platform rationalization, and digital enablement initiatives.
  • Drive the adoption and integration of Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI capabilities across supported business functions to improve efficiency, decision-making, risk management, employee experience, and operational effectiveness.
  • Champion Agile delivery methodologies and engineering excellence to improve execution, accelerate time-to-market, and increase organizational agility.
  • Oversee the technology portfolio supporting Finance, Risk, Legal, HR, and Corporate Functions, ensuring scalable, resilient, secure, and future-ready solutions.
  • Provide executive oversight and strategic direction for key enterprise platforms, including Oracle Finance systems, Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) technologies, Archer, and other critical corporate function applications.
  • Partner closely with Finance and Risk leadership to enhance capabilities supporting financial management, statutory and regulatory reporting, operational risk, enterprise risk management, controls monitoring, governance, and compliance.
  • Ensure technology solutions support regulatory expectations, policy requirements, risk management frameworks, and audit standards within a highly regulated banking environment.
  • Establish and maintain strong governance practices, ensuring alignment with Enterprise Governance, Compliance, and Risk standards, risk frameworks, and taxonomies.
  • Lead technology teams responsible for strategy, architecture, engineering, delivery, operational support, and vendor management across the portfolio.
  • Build and develop high-performing leadership teams while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, inclusion, continuous improvement, and talent development.
  • Manage strategic relationships with vendors and external partners to maximize value, drive innovation, and remain current on industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Design, implement, maintain, and enhance internal controls to mitigate operational, regulatory, cybersecurity, and technology risk on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit findings, regulatory commitments, and remediation activities.
  • Collaborate with enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, data, and engineering organizations to ensure technology solutions align with enterprise standards and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience Required

  • A combined minimum of 15 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 4 years' engineering and/or architecture experience and 11 years' large technology management / program leadership experience including people management
  • Prior experience serving as a Engineering Director or comparable senior technology executive responsible for enterprise-scale business and technology portfolios.
  • Extensive banking or financial services experience, with deep domain expertise supporting Finance and Risk organizations.
  • Proven experience leading significant modernization and transformation initiatives, including cloud migration, platform modernization, operating model transformation, and technology simplification efforts.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Finance technology environments, including Oracle-based financial platforms and related financial management systems.
  • Deep understanding of Risk technology, governance frameworks, controls environments, regulatory requirements, Archer, Enterprise Governance, Compliance and Risk (EGCR) capabilities, and risk taxonomy frameworks.
  • Experience operating successfully within highly regulated environments and partnering directly with regulators, auditors, compliance organizations, and risk management teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Generative AI, AI-enabled technologies, and emerging technology trends, with demonstrated experience applying these capabilities to enterprise business challenges.
  • Proven success leading Agile organizations and driving Agile transformation across large technology teams.
  • Experience leading organizations consisting of multiple teams, senior leaders, and large-scale technology portfolios.
  • Expertise in communicating effectively with executive management, Boards, regulators, and external stakeholders.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience leading enterprise-wide transformation initiatives involving Finance, Risk, Governance, Compliance, Human Capital Management, and Legal technology ecosystems.
  • Experience implementing AI and Generative AI strategies within regulated financial services organizations.
  • Advanced degree (MBA, Master's, or equivalent).
