Essential Job Function
Department: Finance & Accounting
Location: White Sulphur Springs, WV
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Position Summary
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the daily operations of the Accounting Department for The Greenbrier and its affiliated entities. This role is responsible for managing key accounting functions, supervising transactional accounting staff, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records. The Assistant Controller plays an integral role in the month-end close process, financial reporting, internal controls, and continuous process improvement while serving as the Controller's designee when needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day general ledger accounting operations in coordination with the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll teams.
  • Lead assigned portions of the month-end close process, including preparing and reviewing journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and inter company allocations.
  • Review balance sheet reconciliations and resolve outstanding reconciling items.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of daily revenue postings from property management and point-of-sale systems to the general ledger.
  • Assist with bank reconciliations, cash reporting, and cash application activities in partnership with the Treasury team.
  • Maintain fixed asset records, depreciation schedules, and capital project tracking.
  • Prepare draft financial statements and supporting schedules for review.
  • Assist with annual audits by preparing requested documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Support the preparation of sales and use tax, occupancy tax, and other required tax filings.
  • Supervise accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and support to promote accuracy and efficiency.
  • Serve as acting Controller during periods of absence.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Five (5) or more years of progressive accounting experience with direct responsibility for month-end close activities.
  • Previous supervisory experience or demonstrated readiness to lead a professional accounting team.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), account reconciliations, and internal control practices.
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting, including inter company transactions.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookup functions, and large data analysis.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet recurring deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA license or active candidate for license.
  • Hospitality, resort, or multi-entity accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI).
  • Experience with Sage 100, Opera PMS, Simphony POS, or similar accounting and hospitality systems.
  • Experience supporting external audits.
  • Experience with ERP implementations or accounting process improvements.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment on resort property.
  • Extended periods of computer and keyboard use.
  • Additional hours may be required during month-end close, budget preparation, audits, and other peak business periods.
  • Occasional travel throughout the resort property to collaborate with operational departments.
