What is a contract writer?

Contract writers are professionals who specialize in drafting, reviewing, and editing legal agreements and contracts. They ensure that contracts are clear, legally sound, and tailored to the specific needs of the parties involved. Contract writers often work with businesses, law firms, or individuals to create documents for employment, sales, partnerships, and other agreements. Their expertise helps prevent misunderstandings and protects the interests of all parties by making sure the contract complies with relevant laws. They may also advise on contract terms and negotiate on behalf of their clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Writer, you need strong legal writing skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of contract law, often supported by a degree in law, English, or a related field. Familiarity with document management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and sometimes legal research tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis is typically required. Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills help set outstanding contract writers apart. These competencies are crucial for creating clear, enforceable agreements that protect the interests of all parties and minimize legal risk.

What are some common challenges contract writers face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract Writers often work with several clients at once, which can present challenges such as managing conflicting deadlines, adapting to different writing styles or brand voices, and balancing workload priorities. Staying organized with project management tools and maintaining clear communication with clients are essential to ensure timely delivery and consistent quality. Additionally, Contract Writers must be adept at quickly understanding new subject matter and client expectations, which helps them deliver tailored content efficiently.

  • Review government contracts, SOWs, CDRLs, and modifications to identify deliverables, deadlines, and key requirements
  • Distill contractual requirements into clear, actionable tasks for Technical Managers and internal teams
  • Develop and maintain deliverables (CDRL) trackers to ensure visibility and on-time completion
  • Support preparation of deliverables, including formatting, editing, and assembling inputs from multiple contributors
  • Assist with submission of deliverables to Government and Prime contractor systems
  • Coordinate with internal organizations (Engineering, Quality, InfoSec, Accounting, Operations) to ensure requirements are understood and addressed
  • Support proposal efforts by reviewing RFPs and identifying requirements, risks, and compliance needs
  • Help ensure consistency, accountability, and follow-through across multiple active programs

Requirements & Desired Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related field preferred
  • 3–8 years of experience in Government Contracting, Program Support, or related roles
  • Ability to read and understand government contracts and extract key requirements
  • Familiarity with FAR, DFARS, CDRLs, and DoD contracting environments
  • Experience supporting proposals and/or contract execution
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple efforts simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Active Secret security clearance or ability to receive and maintain clearance
  • Can read Govt contracts and RFQs and understand compliance requirements
  • Flexible mentality and willingness to adapt to a dynamic small business culture
  • Enjoys working across teams to support execution
  • Is comfortable operating with autonomy and accountability
  • Brings structure and follow-through without adding unnecessary bureaucracy
