SUMMARY

Uses creative and analytical methods to develop, evaluate, and communicate the configuration and characteristics of a region, system, or component of ships as governed by the assigned discipline, in compliance with internal and external requirements. Effective decision-maker for assigned discipline(s), seeking advice and/or direction appropriate to experience and tasking.

Functions include strategic analysis and weight estimation/validation through all stages of ship design and construction. Knowledge of shipboard systems and proficiency with large databases preferred. Supports shipyard evolutions such as ship launches, incline experiments and deadweight surveys. Candidate should be able to work with multiple stakeholders within Engineering and Production to gather information in support of weight estimation/calculation tasks assigned to them.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes products with supervision and technical oversight at key junctures in development

  • When confronted with change, actively controls scope creep and identifies the implication of change within own group and immediate downstream customers

  • Identifies potential problems in own products and similar products by others
  • Facilitates resolutions to problems or technical issues using common industry methods
  • Uses oral and written communication skills, including through e-mail, to create presentations, reports, and draft external technical correspondence to line personnel for owners and production
  • Participates in internal and external working groups (such as those involving customer and regulatory bodies), including documenting discussions, decisions, and outcomes
  • Periodically provides technical leadership to teams executing small-scope projects

  • Routinely mentors two or more Engineers, and teaches technical skills specific to own discipline

  • Assists with the implementation of department processes

  • Locates related requirements of current tasks in addition to locating specific requirements (such as rules, regulations, contracts, references) that apply to tasked work and applicable revisions

  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent in Engineering or Applied Sciences, or Professional Engineer's License

  • Typically, at least four (4) years of practical experience, exclusive of education in engineering design.Operational or shipyard test or production experience may contribute to this requirement

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License and/or advanced degree desirable
  • Qualifying skills include contributing to the department's team environment with a consistently positive attitude, a mindset to actively seek improving one's self, teammates, and work processes, initiative, accountability, commitment, and flexibility to changing assignments and processes

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The essential functions of this role require work in both an office and industrial setting. The role requires prolonged periods of working in a stationary position, operating a computer, computer programs, and standard office equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. The role requires perceiving information and communicating effectively with others in person, online, and on the phone. The role also requires prolonged periods of working in indoor and outdoor industrial settings. Must have the ability to safely access, navigate, and traverse the shipyard, construction areas, production areas, ships, and warehouses. Must be able to transit uneven surfaces, and be agile to move quickly to avoid hazards and respond to unexpected obstacles. Must be able to observe, detect, identify, perceive, recognize, and process information to remain alert and timely comply with all safety requirements. Must be able to move, transport, and use equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. Duties performed on ships require ascending and descending stairs and ladders, transiting on scaffolding and at heights, transiting through manholes and other narrow, confined, or congested spaces. This position requires exposure to industrial areas which contain hazardous materials, loud noise (including sirens, horns, chipping, slamming, and hammering), dust, fumes, and exposure to weather.

PAY SCALE

$97,500 - $138,300

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
