What is an applied engineer?

Applied engineers are professionals who use principles of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve practical problems and improve processes in various industries. Unlike theoretical engineers, applied engineers focus on implementing and optimizing technology, equipment, and systems in real-world settings. They often work in manufacturing, product development, quality control, and operations, bridging the gap between design and production. Applied engineers are skilled in troubleshooting, project management, and applying technical knowledge to enhance efficiency and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an applied engineer?

To thrive as an Applied Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, problem-solving, and project management, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, manufacturing systems, and quality control tools, as well as certifications like Six Sigma or Lean, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities ensure efficient project execution, innovative solutions, and successful collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

How do applied engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during project development?

Applied Engineers often play a central role in project development by bridging the gap between design concepts and practical implementation. They work closely with teams from R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure that solutions are both innovative and feasible. Regular meetings, collaborative problem-solving sessions, and clear communication are essential to address technical challenges and align project goals. This collaborative environment not only enhances project outcomes but also provides opportunities for Applied Engineers to learn from other disciplines and advance their careers.

What jobs can you get with applied engineering?

Applied engineers can pursue roles such as systems engineers, product development engineers, process engineers, and technical consultants. These positions often involve designing, testing, and improving products or systems using engineering principles and technical skills. They may work in industries like manufacturing, technology, aerospace, or energy, often requiring knowledge of tools like CAD software and relevant certifications.

Job description

About DualEntry
DualEntry is building the OS for finance.
Every business needs a financial system of record, yet the world's largest fintech market ($220B+) still runs on software from the 1990s. DualEntry's AI-native ERP automates accounting from data entry to close, so finance teams move faster, spend less and incur less risk.
In just 2 years we've raised $100M+ from Lightspeed, Khosla Ventures, Contrary and Google Ventures and earned the trust of customers from $5M ARR to publicly traded companies.
We hire outliers - people who have achieved difficult things, in their careers or beyond. You'll find leaders, colleagues who've competed at the highest levels of sport, performed on Broadway, trained with UFC champions and founded the country's largest Python community.
Where You'll Create Impact
  • Build!
  • Embed on named customer projects and own them end to end: discovery, design, build, deploy and verify
  • Build migration and integration pipelines on Temporal that are idempotent, resumable, and auditable
  • Model and load customer accounting data into Postgres correctly, including reconciling against their existing system
  • Build internal tooling so recurring one-offs stop being one-offs
  • Feed patterns back into the core product, and productize or hand off anything that becomes permanent
  • Compress the path from "customer requested" to "shipped"

What Sets You Up for Success
  • Hardcore work ethic and high agency
  • 5+ years shipping production full stack software, end to end and unsupervised
  • Django and DRF, plus Postgres beyond ORM defaults. You read query plans and you have run migrations against live data with customers on it
  • Next.js and React with TypeScript
  • Durable workflow experience. Temporal preferred but Celery is fine
  • Direct customer exposure on past experiences. You have sat with a customer, scoped the problem with them, and shipped against it
  • Experience with third party APIs, webhooks, rate limits, reconciling two systems that disagree
Nice to Have
  • Accounting, ERP, or fintech domain knowledge: double-entry, chart of accounts, close, AP/AR, revenue recognition
  • Prior forward deployed, applied, or special projects experience
  • Judgment about when to ship a script versus build a system

Why You'll Thrive Here
  • Significant equity ownership in one of the top AI companies in the world
  • You're joining early and will grow with DualEntry
  • Your feedback shapes the product directly
  • High-speed, high-trust environment with high expectations

Meet the Team
  • Ignacio shaped the baseline of our integration framework from scratch in a single weekend, then spent most weekends - while coordinating the team - shipping what was never on the roadmap: webhooks, a search engine for millions of transactions, and Puma itself
  • Marcin took a non-existent tax structure and built it end to end, setting the north star for how the team keeps improving it on top of it; modular and robust, always setting the bar for the rest
  • Puhiza grew her team from one to full capacity, while owning our integration framework. The queen of I/O on our platform
  • Danylo took ownership of our bank connection engine end to end and rebuilt it from scratch over a weekend

Compensation & Benefits
  • Equity: $60,000 - $80,000
  • Base salary: $160,000 - $270,000
  • Medical, dental & vision insurance
  • One Medical membership
  • Mental health support (Talkspace)
  • Fertility & family-building support (Kindbody)
  • Virtual healthcare (Teladoc Health)
  • 401(k) benefits
  • Commuter benefits
  • Learning & development budget for courses, certifications & language learning
  • Unlimited AI tokens
  • AI skills development & enablement
  • Visa & permanent residence sponsorship
  • Relocation support for employees moving to New York
  • Flexible PTO (27 days, including public holidays)
  • Collaborative, in-office culture with no bureaucracy
  • Snacks, drinks, team events & more!

"Join us to fix the boring, think the hard, and build the impossible, so we become the most robust engineering platform for accounting the world has ever seen."
Ignacio Brasca, Head of Engineering at DualEntry
