JOB TITLE:

Dental Assisting Instructor

CLASSIFICATION

Adult Certified Limited Contract

ASSIGNMENT:

Adult Education

REPORTS TO:

Director of Adult Workforce Education

CONTRACT:

Part-Time Evening

Position Overview

The Dental Assisting Instructor's primary goal is to prepare students to pass national or state certification exams, including the Certified Dental Assistant Credential, and secure employment in dental practices. This role requires a blend of classroom lecturing, laboratory demonstration, and clinical supervision to ensure students are proficient in modern dental procedures.ย ย 

Key Responsibilities:ย 

  • Introduce students to the Dental Assistant Technician pathways by applying fundamental principles of communication, leadership, technology and management in the medical office setting.
  • Design and implement lesson plans that align with state standards and industry requirements, covering topics like dental anatomy, tooth morphology, histology, and dental charting.
  • Demonstrate and supervise technical skills in a lab setting, including chairside assisting, equipment sterilization (infection control), instrument transfer, and taking dental X-rays.
  • Teach the "front office" side of dentistry, such as appointment scheduling, patient record management (HIPAA compliance), and basic billing or insurance coding.
  • Apply the knowledge of radiation physics, infection prevention and quality control standards.
  • Apply the knowledge of head and neck anatomy with a focus on the oral cavity and teeth.
  • Learn the chemical and physical properties of dental materials, their indications for use, and proper manipulation of the materials.
  • Perform chair-side assisting techniques to include instrument sterilization, fluoride applications, dietary analysis and assisting physicians.
  • Emphasis on understanding terminology, instruments and equipment, and patient communication.ย 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years as a Certified/Registered Dental Assistant.
  • Certifications: American Medical Technologist (AMT)
  • Be able to obtain the Ohio Department of Education Adult Permit.
  • Radiology License required.
  • Effective organizational, planning and project management skills.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement program options, auxiliary services, and curricular materials that support the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Must be able to communicate well and work collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in operating office equipment and using modern office technology, including Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, internet browsers, and virtual meeting platforms.
