The Grant Writer is an integral member of the Advancement team, working to make positive changes for people with mental health challenges, substance use disorder, and disabilities. Grant funding is a key driver of agency growth, program enhancement, and mission impact. Reporting to the Director of Mission Impact, the Grant Writer is responsible for identifying, researching, and writing compelling proposals and related reports for funding from private foundations, corporate foundations, and government sources. This position manages the grant development process from opportunity identification through submission and post-award reporting, partnering closely with program leadership, clinical and education teams, Finance, CQI, and other internal stakeholders to develop strong case narratives, clear outcomes, and compliant budgets that align with Spurwink's strategic priorities and funder guidelines. This position is hybrid with office-based and remote work.ย

DUTIES:ย 

  • Develop and submit competitive grant proposals and applications to private foundations, corporate funders, and state and federal agencies.
  • Support successful grant implementation by participating in grant/contract workgroups to monitor progress, identify risks to deliverables, and coordinate timely communication with funders.
  • Prepare and submit timely, accurate interim and final reports to funders, in collaboration with program staff, Finance, CQI, and other departments, including narrative outcomes and financial reporting as required.
  • Maintain accurate, organized grant records, including an agency-wide grants calendar, funder guidelines and documentation, submissions, reporting schedules, and associated CRM/grants management system entries.
  • Conduct ongoing prospect research on foundations and government opportunities; use grant databases and other tools to identify viable funding sources and recommend opportunities aligned with organizational priorities and readiness.
  • Contribute to advancement communications as needed (e.g., funder-facing collateral, program descriptions, newsletters, and other content) in coordination with the Advancement team.
  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Mission Impact and relevant departments regarding proposal status, upcoming deadlines, and information needed for submissions and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in a related field plus at least two (2) years of relevant experience in grant writing required; master's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience in writing, research, fundraising, or nonprofit development. Previous experience with nonprofit grant writing. Experience writing proposals in response to state and federal RFPs and institutional donors. Experience working in deadline-driven environments. Able to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with Spurwink clinical and education teams, finance, CQI and other administrative departments to prepare proposals. Experience writing for mental health, health, IDD, education, or social service agency preferred. Ability to maintain focus on multiple projects and appropriately prioritize activities to meet deliverables. Requires above average competency with Microsoft Office 365 including Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
