Contract Release Train Engineer information

What is a contract release train engineer?

Contract Release Train Engineers (RTEs) are professionals who facilitate Agile Release Trains (ARTs) within organizations, typically on a contract basis. They serve as servant leaders and coaches, ensuring that teams follow Agile processes, remove impediments, and coordinate large-scale software delivery. Contract RTEs are often brought in for their expertise to guide organizations through specific projects or Agile transformations, providing flexibility and specialized knowledge without a long-term employment commitment.

What is the difference between Contract Release Train Engineer vs Scrum Master?

AspectContract Release Train EngineerScrum Master
CertificationsSAFe Program Consultant (SPC), SAFe certificationsCSM, PSM
Work EnvironmentLarge-scale Agile/SAFe environments, multiple teamsSingle Scrum team, Agile projects
Industry UsageOrganizations adopting SAFe for enterprise agilityStartups, small to medium teams, Agile projects

The Contract Release Train Engineer (RTE) and Scrum Master both facilitate Agile processes, but RTEs operate at an enterprise level managing multiple teams within SAFe frameworks, often requiring SAFe certifications. Scrum Masters focus on individual teams, guiding Agile practices at a team level. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign roles effectively based on project scope and scale.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract release train engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Release Train Engineer, you need expertise in Agile methodologies, program management, and a solid understanding of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), typically supported by SAFe RTE certification and relevant experience. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, and Agile planning software is essential for tracking progress and facilitating collaboration. Strong leadership, facilitation, and communication skills help foster alignment and resolve impediments across teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring timely and efficient delivery of value across large-scale Agile programs.

How does a contract release train engineer typically interact with cross-functional teams during a program increment (PI)?

As a Contract Release Train Engineer (RTE), you play a central role in facilitating communication and alignment across multiple agile teams within an Agile Release Train (ART). During a Program Increment (PI), you organize and lead PI Planning sessions, ensuring that teams understand objectives, dependencies, and timelines. You regularly coordinate with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and stakeholders to resolve impediments and track progress, helping teams stay on course to deliver value. This collaborative environment requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as you'll often mediate between technical and business perspectives to keep everyone aligned.

Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world. We have an exciting opportunity for a Product Owner supporting one of our premier programs within Raytheon, an RTX Business. In this role, you will serve as the Product Owner for an Agile development team within the Mission Engineering and Platform & Security Integration (PSI) Agile Release Train (ART). You will lead backlog management, story refinement, and work prioritization while partnering with Product Managers, Scrum Masters, Systems Engineers, and Software Engineers to deliver mission-critical capabilities. This position is contingent upon contract award. The work is on-site in Aurora, CO.

What You Will Do
  • Own and maintain the team-level product backlog, ensuring user stories are prioritized, refined, and ready for execution.
  • Decompose capabilities, features, and customer requirements into actionable user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria.
  • Validate completed work against acceptance criteria and approve completed stories.
  • Partner with the Scrum Master, Product Manager, Systems Engineers, and Software Engineers to prepare upcoming sprints while maintaining a healthy, prioritized backlog.
  • Coordinate cross-team dependencies with other Product Owners to ensure alignment across Agile Release Train (ART) teams.
  • Support capability elaboration, backlog refinement, sprint planning, Program Increment (PI) Planning, sprint reviews, and technical program milestones.
  • Incorporate systems engineering, integration, cybersecurity, and platform requirements into backlog priorities.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance Agile execution, backlog quality, and delivery predictability.

  • Experience serving as a Product Owner, Backlog Manager, Business Analyst, Systems Engineer, or similar Agile role supporting software development.
  • Experience decomposing capabilities and features into user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria while maintaining Agile product backlogs.
  • Experience working within Agile development environments, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and Program Increment (PI) Planning.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government-issued TS/SCI security clearance is required prior to the start date.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer
  • Experience supporting the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Agile Release Trains (ARTs), or other large-scale Agile software development environments.
  • Experience collaborating with Product Managers, Scrum Masters, Systems Engineers, Software Engineers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Experience translating customer, operator, or mission requirements into prioritized user stories and backlog items.
  • Experience supporting systems engineering, mission capability development, digital engineering, or platform-based architectures.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional dependencies across integration, cybersecurity, platform, software engineering, and systems engineering organizations.
  • Experience using Agile collaboration and backlog management tools such as Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting technical reviews, customer demonstrations, Program Increment (PI) Planning, release planning, and Agile program execution.
