Job description

Legal Manager - JT International S.A., Raleigh, NC

Position purpose

Support the JT International U.S.A., Inc. (JTI US) Legal Director to ensure that the JTI US legal team and the global Legal & Regulatory Affairs (LRA) team fully contribute to the achievement of JTI's business objectives. Support all business functions by providing high-quality legal advice regarding the US market to find the most optimal way to execute JTI's strategies in the US and the Americas region and achieve sustainable business growth. Manage company litigation with a focus on products liability litigation.

Responsibilities
  • Litigation: Manage a large volume of litigation in collaboration with external counsel, with a focus on products liability litigation. Develop case management strategies, perform risk assessments, provide recommendations for case development, including settlements, instruct and manage outside counsel accordingly. Additionally, with support from an assigned paralegal, manage internal litigation reporting and obtain the required internal approvals related to litigation, as necessary. Manage costs of external counsel and seek efficiencies within the framework of the annual JTI US legal budget.
  • Regulatory Law: Provide advice on US law related to tobacco and vaping, including rules and regulations from state and federal agencies such as the FDA, FTC and TTB. Assist in managing the US market’s compliance with applicable legislation and agreements such as the Tobacco Control Act, the PACT Act and the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. Anticipate, monitor and analyze legislation, assessing its impact on JTI. Proactively identify legal and reputational risks and collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement mitigation measures.
  • Compliance: Provide advice on US compliance issues, including competition law, sanctions, anti‑bribery, anti‑harassment, cybersecurity and data protection. Assist in responding to governmental audits, inspections or interactions with regulatory authorities. Manage the approval process on marketing materials for JTI’s products. Prepare and conduct trainings on the above topics.
  • Contracts: Manage, advise on and negotiate contracts, intercompany agreements and terms & conditions for JTI US entities. Develop contract templates and samples, and maintain JTI’s contract management tool. Draft and review contracts, policies, procedures and other legal documents.
  • Legal Director Support: Provide support to the Legal Director on all legal matters, including marketing law, labor law, government relations, corporate governance, mergers, acquisitions, international trade, taxation and similar issues.
Requirements
  • Law degree and qualification to practice law in the United States.
  • 3+ years of US litigation experience, preferably US products liability litigation experience.
  • Fluency in English with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The Legal Manager must be confident, well‑organized, strategic, and a team player with a commercial mindset. The Legal Manager must also have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work well under pressure in order to meet deadlines and execute with excellence. A successful candidate should be able to deal with ambiguity/uncertainty and adjust to changing circumstances and obstacles, with the ability to prioritize and manage time well.
