Contract Engineering information

What is contract engineering?

Contract engineering refers to the practice of hiring engineers on a temporary or project-specific basis, rather than as permanent employees. Contract engineers work for a set period or until a particular project is completed, often through staffing agencies or as independent contractors. This arrangement allows companies to access specialized skills and expertise as needed while providing engineers with flexibility and exposure to diverse projects. Contract engineers typically handle tasks such as design, development, testing, and project management across various industries.

How does a Contract Engineer typically balance multiple projects and ensure timely delivery of each contract?

Contract Engineers often manage several projects simultaneously, requiring strong organizational and time-management skills. They regularly coordinate with clients, suppliers, and internal teams to track progress, address issues early, and adjust timelines as needed. Utilizing project management tools and maintaining clear documentation helps them prioritize tasks and deliverables effectively. Open communication and proactive problem-solving are key strategies to meet contract milestones and client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, contract management, and project coordination, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in contract administration. Familiarity with contract management software, project management tools (such as MS Project or Primavera), and industry regulations is essential. Strong negotiation, communication, and attention to detail are vital soft skills for effectively managing client and vendor relationships. These skills ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with contractual and technical requirements.

Join a Global Leader in Mining Technology

FLSmidth is a leading mining equipment supplier supported by a global team of talented and ambitious employees across more than 60 countries.

You will be joining the Downstream Gold product line within the FLSmidth group. This team provides gold and silver recovery systems and equipment to clients around the globe. Our multidisciplinary group includes process, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers, as well as designers, working together to meet the high expectations of our clients.

We engineer high-quality equipment and systems designed to meet the demanding needs of the precious metals industry and support reliable operation for years to come. Our goal is to become the leading equipment and systems provider in the gold and silver recovery market.

Chief Engineer Responsibilities

  • Drive and manage all aspects of the process engineering needs of the product line, including process engineering deliverables, project execution support, standardization, value engineering, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Serve as the overall technical lead for assigned projects, coordinating process, mechanical, electrical, automation, and structural engineering personnel through project execution.
  • Thoroughly understand client specifications, project requirements, applicable standards, and scope of supply, and ensure these requirements are properly incorporated into project execution.
  • Lead the project execution team in defining and communicating process requirements. Collaborate with internal engineering teams, Chennai support staff, EPCs, vendors, and contract engineering resources to execute project deliverables.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables across all disciplines are complete, coordinated, technically consistent, and aligned with project scope, client requirements, budget, and schedule.
  • Develop and review process data sheets, sizing sheets, design criteria, calculations, and equipment requirements for process equipment and systems.
  • Efficiently communicate process design requirements to designers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, automation engineers, structural engineers, vendors, and project management.
  • Lead the development of process engineering deliverables, including P&IDs, PFDs, material and energy balances, equipment lists, control philosophies, functional specifications, and related project documents.
  • Provide interdisciplinary design coordination to ensure drawings, specifications, equipment selections, layouts, controls, utilities, structural supports, and vendor information properly align.
  • Identify and resolve engineering interface issues between process requirements, equipment design, piping and layout, electrical loads, instrumentation, controls, automation logic, and structural requirements.
  • Review project deliverables for technical completeness, constructability, operability, maintainability, safety, and consistency between engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in and support process design reviews, interdisciplinary design reviews, client reviews, and HAZOPs.
  • Ensure safety-related project requirements are properly reflected in engineering deliverables, including equipment guarding, access and egress, maintenance clearances, lifting requirements, hot surfaces, chemical exposure, pressure and temperature hazards, ventilation needs, interlocks, alarms, and emergency shutdown requirements.
  • Confirm safety-critical deliverables such as P&IDs, control philosophies, functional specifications, equipment layouts, access platforms, and interlock descriptions are reviewed for consistency with project hazards and operating requirements.
  • Support project managers by identifying engineering risks, scope gaps, budget concerns, schedule impacts, technical issues, and decisions requiring client or management input.
  • Provide technical direction and support to project engineers, designers, international support teams, EPCs, vendors, and contract engineering resources.
  • Provide process and technical support at client mine sites, including pre-commissioning, commissioning, troubleshooting, productivity improvement, efficiency improvement, and operational support.
  • Provide process and technical support to Sales and Marketing teams, including active support for proposal development, equipment selection, scope definition, and review of client requirements.
  • Support project execution across product lines by providing process engineering guidance, technical review, and project deliverable support as needed.
  • Responsible for leading the engineering team in the development of quality project deliverables that are technically complete, coordinated across disciplines, and issued on time and within budget.
  • Ensure lessons learned from previous projects, commissioning, site support, vendor performance, and equipment operation are incorporated into future project execution and standard designs.
  • Lead and contribute to standardization, value engineering, and team improvement initiatives that improve project execution, product quality, cost effectiveness, and engineering efficiency.
  • Lead R&D initiatives related to system, process, equipment, safety, reliability, maintainability, and performance improvements.
  • Collaborate effectively with international design and support staff. This position requires coordination across time zones and may require work or scheduled meetings outside normal office hours.

What you bring

  • Strong experience in process engineering, process design, and project execution for industrial equipment and systems.
  • Proficient in developing and reviewing P&IDs, PFDs, material and energy balances, control philosophies, functional specifications, process data sheets, and related engineering deliverables.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accurate, consistent, and high-quality engineering documentation.
  • Ability to understand client specifications, project requirements, applicable standards, and scope of supply, and incorporate them into project deliverables.
  • Experience specifying process equipment and system components, including valves, instruments, pumps, heat exchangers, tanks, piping, utilities, and related equipment.
  • Ability to define instrumentation, control, interlock, alarm, and operating requirements in coordination with electrical and automation teams.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams, including process, mechanical, electrical, automation, structural, and design personnel.
  • Strong technical judgment with the ability to balance safety, performance, cost, schedule, constructability, operability, and maintainability.
  • Ability to review and coordinate engineering deliverables across disciplines to ensure the overall project design is complete, consistent, and executable.
