What is a contract digital product manager?

A Contract Digital Product Manager is a professional hired on a temporary or project-specific basis to oversee the development and management of digital products, such as websites, apps, or software platforms. Unlike full-time employees, they work under a contractual agreement, often for a set duration or until project completion. Their responsibilities include defining product vision, collaborating with cross-functional teams, managing product roadmaps, and ensuring successful product delivery. Contract roles offer flexibility for both employers and managers, allowing for specialized expertise to be brought in as needed.

What are some common challenges faced by contract digital product managers, and how can they effectively integrate with existing teams?

As a Contract Digital Product Manager, one common challenge is quickly understanding the company's product landscape and aligning with the existing team's workflows and culture. Since contract roles are often project-based and time-limited, it's important to establish clear communication channels and build trust rapidly with stakeholders, designers, and engineers. Successful contract managers usually prioritize onboarding efficiently, clarify expectations early, and leverage their external perspective to suggest improvements. Proactively seeking feedback and staying adaptable can help ensure smooth integration and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract digital product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Digital Product Manager, you need expertise in product lifecycle management, user experience design, and agile methodologies, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in digital product development. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, analytics platforms, and product management certifications such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) are commonly expected. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities help you align teams and drive product success. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering high-impact digital products on time and within budget in a fast-paced, contract-based environment.

The Digital Product Manager is responsible for the strategic elevation of Kohler Co.'s digital capabilities to provide associates, partners, and customers with best-in-class experiences.

This role focuses on creating digital experiences customers love-easy, seamless, and effective-while ensuring they also work for the business by supporting commercial goals, operational efficiency, and long-term growth. Partnering across business, technology, design, and analytics teams, the Digital Product Manager identifies problems-to-solve, translates priorities into a clear product backlog, and guides Agile delivery from discovery through launch and continuous optimization. The role also serves as a key connector across stakeholders, balancing user needs, business goals, and technical considerations to deliver meaningful outcomes through data-driven decision-making.

Primary Scope and Function

  • Own and drive the product strategy, vision, and roadmap for a digital product, journey or feature set endtoend.
  • Manage the digital product portfolio end to end, with accountability for customer experience, business outcomes, and value delivery.
  • Lead customer discovery, research, and problem definition to identify high-impact opportunities and keep the voice of the customer at the center of decisions.
  • Own and prioritize the product backlog, translating business needs into clear user stories and acceptance criteria for Agile delivery teams.
  • Guide roadmap, release, and trade-off decisions by balancing business priorities, user needs, technical feasibility, and cross-platform dependencies.
  • Partner closely with Developers, UX/UI Design, Analytics, and business stakeholders to deliver seamless digital experiences across the journey.
  • Lead refinement and execution for delivering product outcomes that improve customer and business outcomes
  • Use data, testing, and performance insights to define success metrics, measure outcomes, and continuously optimize the product experience.
  • Communicate product vision, roadmap priorities, development progress, and key trade-offs clearly to stakeholders through regular planning and sprint review forums.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for digital product capabilities and experiences, helping align teams around best practices, business processes, and strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate across functions to identify process improvement opportunities, challenge legacy approaches, and drive scalable digital solutions.
  • Promote strong product management and Agile practices by fostering collaboration, clarity, and disciplined decision-making across teams.
  • Embrace new technologies and emerging market trends to solve complex challenges.
