Chief Technology Officer

Berry Law Firm

Lincoln, NE • On-site

Full-time

This job post has expired today. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

Mission

Own and execute the firm's data, analytics, applications, AI, and supporting technology infrastructure strategy, against priorities set by the COO, so that practice groups, operations, and leadership can reliably use technology and data to drive better outcomes, higher productivity, and superior client service, while upholding the security, governance, and resilience standards established with the CIO/CISO.

About Berry Law

Berry Law is a nationally recognized, Veteran-owned law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of veterans and helping them secure the benefits they earned through their service. The data, applications, and technology we build directly shape how effectively our attorneys and staff serve clients. If you enjoy building teams, solving complex problems, and turning technology into real-world results in a fast-paced environment, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.

Position Summary

The Chief Technology Officer leads the firm's data, analytics/BI, business applications, AI, and supporting infrastructure. Working from priorities set by the COO and within standards established with the CIO/CISO, the CTO turns operational, practice, and client-service needs into prioritized initiatives and delivers them through internal teams and vendors. This is a hands-on leadership role: the first year balances strategy and team-building with direct project and operational work, maturing into a true executive function.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute the firm's data, analytics/BI, applications, AI, and infrastructure roadmap based on COO/CIO and practice-group priorities
  • Serve as the primary technology partner to the COO and practice heads, turning needs into prioritized initiatives and releases
  • Present systems architecture recommendations to senior management for funding decisions
  • Lead, coach, and develop the Director of Data & Analytics, the Business Applications Architect, and their teams

Data & Analytics (BI)

  • Ensure a robust data model and KPI framework supporting firm-wide reporting and analysis
  • Govern key data definitions, access rules, and data-quality practices
  • Drive delivery and adoption of dashboards and reports for leadership, practice groups, finance, and operations

Business Applications & Integrations

  • Own the design and integration of practice-specific applications and automations with core platforms (e.g., Clio, Filevine, Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft 365, Azure)
  • Translate practice requirements into technical designs, backlogs, and release plans
  • Ensure custom applications align with the security, data, and integration standards set with the CIO

AI, Automation & Innovation

  • Lead the firm's AI and automation strategy, prioritizing pragmatic, high-impact use cases
  • Manage AI solutions vendors, ensuring delivered solutions are integrated, documented, and supportable
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies and scale what works

Infrastructure, Security & Governance

  • Help implement technology and cybersecurity policies defined with the CIO/CISO
  • Support disaster-recovery and business-continuity planning, testing, and execution
  • Participate in vendor selection, contracting, and performance management

What Success Looks Like

Twelve months in, this hire is a success when:

  • SaaS integrations and the data/analytics environment (models, pipelines, dashboards) are stable, with agreed KPIs adopted by leadership, finance, and the practices
  • Practice-specific applications and automations are materially improving client outcomes, throughput, accuracy, and the attorney and staff experience
  • A portfolio of high-impact AI and automation use cases is live with measurable productivity or quality gains under firm-approved guardrails
  • A trusted technology roadmap, tied to firm growth, guides planning and investment
  • A right-sized internal team and vendor structure delivers on time, on budget, and to spec
  • All solutions meet firm security, privacy, and client requirements and stay aligned with the CIO, COO, and practice leaders
  • The CTO has become the COO's trusted advisor on SaaS and AI, a strategic partner, not only a systems manager

Who Thrives Here

This role is likely a great fit if you:

  • Thrive in a lean, high-expectation environment where priorities can shift quickly
  • Enjoy working directly with attorneys and practice leaders and can translate between business and technical language
  • Are comfortable moving between strategy and hands-on detail, like reviewing a data model or integration design
  • Value measured experimentation with AI and new tools, piloting fast, scaling only what works and is safe
  • Take pride in building teams, processes, and systems that last

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years in technology roles, including 5+ years in senior leadership (Director, VP, or CTO) across data/BI, applications, infrastructure, and/or digital transformation
  • Proven experience leading data and analytics teams and application development/integration in a complex, multi-system environment
  • Working knowledge of modern development practices and languages (e.g., C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python) sufficient to review designs and guide developers
  • Demonstrated project and program management for technology initiatives, including roadmapping and delivery using structured methods (Agile/Scrum or hybrid)
  • Experience with network/systems architecture, infrastructure operations, cybersecurity policy, and disaster-recovery/business-continuity planning
  • Hands-on familiarity with cloud/SaaS platforms (e.g., Clio, Filevine, Salesforce, Microsoft 365, Azure), BI/data tooling (Domo, Tableau, Power BI, ETL/ELT), and APIs/integrations
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence non-technical stakeholders

Preferred

  • Experience in a law firm or professional-services environment
  • Familiarity with case/practice management, document management (DMS), and time/billing systems
  • Practical experience implementing generative AI or machine learning in a business context
  • Prior collaboration with security and compliance leaders on secure solution design
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field required; Master's degree or MBA a plus

Compensation & Performance

We believe high performers should be rewarded. This role offers compensation and performance incentives tied to delivery, business impact, and building out the firm's technology function.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid / remote, based out of Lincoln, Nebraska
  • Mid-sized firm (~300 users) with a lean, high-expectation, performance-driven culture
  • First-year time mix: about 50% strategy and leadership, 30% project and program management, and 20% hands-on and operational work, maturing toward roughly 40% / 50% / 10% at steady state
  • Significant autonomy and executive growth opportunity for a successful leader

Why This Role Matters

The systems, data, and applications you lead determine how effectively Berry Law serves the veterans and clients who depend on the firm. Your work supports the firm's growth and the daily effectiveness of every attorney and staff member, turning technology into better outcomes for the people Berry Law represents.
