Job description

Markon is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee key aspects of the monthly close, financial reporting, technical accounting, and compliance functions within a growing government contracting organization. This role serves as a hands-on leader responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and government contracting regulations, and driving continuous process improvements. Working closely with Finance, Contracts, Pricing, Program Finance, Human Resources, Payroll, and Operations, the Accounting Manager will strengthen accounting operations, enhance internal controls, and support strategic initiatives including acquisition integrations, ERP enhancements, and organizational growth.

This position requires working onsite five days per week.


  • Lead assigned activities within the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and financial analyses.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and balance sheet accounts across multiple legal entities.
  • Research and resolve reconciling items, unusual account activity, and significant financial statement fluctuations.
  • Support the preparation of monthly management reports, financial statements, lender reporting packages, and executive reporting.
  • Partner with Billing and Accounts Receivable to resolve customer account discrepancies, reconcile cash applications, and ensure accurate receivable accounting.
  • Perform payroll accounting activities, including reconciliations of payroll liabilities, payroll taxes, PTO, bonuses, commissions, and employee benefit accruals.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and Payroll to resolve payroll-related issues and ensure accurate payroll accounting.
  • Prepare intercompany reconciliations, elimination entries, and consolidation activities across multiple legal entities.
  • Support acquisition integrations by implementing consistent accounting policies, procedures, and financial reporting practices.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, FAR, CAS, DCAA requirements, and company accounting policies.
  • Support DCAA audits, incurred cost submissions, provisional billing rates, financial statement audits, and other regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Partner with Contracts, Pricing, Program Finance, and Billing to support contract setup, revenue recognition, project accounting, and government contract compliance.
  • Research technical accounting issues and assist with implementing new accounting standards and policies.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that strengthen internal controls, improve accounting efficiencies, and enhance financial reporting.
  • Leverage AI-enabled solutions and ERP capabilities to improve accounting workflows, automation, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in ERP enhancements, finance transformation initiatives, and acquisition-related accounting projects.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and mentorship to accounting staff while remaining actively engaged in operational accounting activities.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. An additional 10 years of directly related accounting experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • US Citizenship required
  • 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including experience within the government contracting industry.
  • Experience reviewing work, mentoring staff, or providing day-to-day leadership within an accounting organization.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, and month-end close processes.
  • Working knowledge of FAR, CAS, DCAA compliance, indirect rate structures, and government contract accounting.
  • 2+ years of experience with Deltek Costpoint or a comparable project-based ERP system.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, financial analyses, and supporting audit activities.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple business functions.

  • Experience supporting organizations with $100M+ in annual revenue or complex multi-entity organizations.
  • Experience with intercompany accounting, consolidations, and payroll accounting.
  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, purchase accounting, or post-acquisition financial integrations.
  • Experience with ERP implementations, finance transformation initiatives, or accounting process automation.
  • Understanding of fringe, overhead, and G&A rate structures.
  • Experience with Cognos, Power BI, or other business intelligence and reporting tools.
  • Experience implementing AI-enabled accounting solutions and workflow automation.
  • CPA certification or active progress toward obtaining a CPA.
