Job description

Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) is seeking an experienced Construction Management Principal to lead a specialized construction management group within our Pittsburgh, PA office. This leadership role offers the opportunity to build upon a long-standing, successful program while advancing CEC’s unique ability to deliver integrated design, permitting, and construction services for a variety of market sectors across multiple disciplines.

You will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day field and construction activities, including oversight of a small group of key personnel, and will be required to communicate and coordinate with engineering and design staff and convey concepts to contractors and field staff.  On some projects, you and/or your team will serve as the owner’s representative. On other projects, you will serve as the key point of contact with strategic CEC subcontractors and oversee their performance on design-bid-build and design-build projects. You will be responsible for overseeing the material and labor cost estimate, construction management budget, and schedule development; evaluating submittals; administering contracts; coordinating field work; managing and supporting construction services managers and field technicians; preparing site specific safety plans; identifying and remedying construction issues; tracking and processing change orders and invoices; project reporting; and various other project tasks. You will also perform periodic site investigations and evaluations of civil, geotechnical, environmental and ecological construction-related issues.  

This position requires a strong balance of engineering knowledge and real-world construction experience, along with an aptitude for risk evaluation, critical decision making, and providing insightful recommendations to office leadership. Additionally, this position requires the ability to develop and maintain strong long-term client relationships, and a passion for mentoring and developing staff.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field required
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred but not required.
  • 15+ years of experience in construction management, civil engineering, or design-build project delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to perform hands-on construction and project management duties and practice-level leadership responsibilities
  • Strong background in:
    • Construction operations and field management
    • Scheduling, coordination, and project controls
    • Submittal review, contract administration, and change management
    • Cost estimating, budgeting, and active financial management
    • Procore certification (or similar) in project management or financial management a plus
    • Constructability review and quality assurance
  • Proven ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and translate design intent into successful construction outcomes
  • Experience managing contractor and subcontractor relationships
  • Strong mentorship and leadership skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and decision-making abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain long-term client relationships and grow new client relationships and opportunities
