Job description

Our client, a mission-driven behavioral health organization in Raleigh, is seeking a Controller (contract-to-hire) to join their growing team. This is a newly created role designed to bridge the gap between the CFO and Senior Accountant, allowing the CFO to focus more heavily on strategic initiatives. This is a contract role that has potential to convert to permanent employment.


This opportunity is ideal for a Senior Accountant ready to take the next step into leadership. The organization is open to developing high-potential talent and values a hands-on, detail-oriented professional who can grow into the role.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and support the accounting team
  • Manage core transaction processing and financial recordkeeping
  • Assist with monthly close and ensure accuracy of financial data
  • Perform financial analysis and provide insights to support decision-making
  • Partner with the CFO on budget development and ongoing budget reviews
  • Support audit preparation (with CFO oversight and final review)
  • Analyze cash flow trends and reporting (CFO to approve)
  • Lead grant tracking, compliance reviews, and sign-offs
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and financial policies
  • Collaborate with the Sr. Financial Accountant, who oversees AP functions


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 4–8+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Experience as a Senior Accountant or similar, ready to step into a Controller-level role
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting fundamentals
  • Experience with month-end close and financial statement preparation
  • Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or financial analysis
  • Systems experience (Blackbaud Financial Edge Preferred.)
