Job description

Controller Position at Prestonwood Country Club

Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, North Carolina, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the Club's accounting and financial operations. This key leadership position oversees financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow, internal controls, payroll, audits, tax compliance, membership billing, and the accounting team. The Controller will also provide financial guidance to the General Manager, department leaders, and Board of Directors while supporting the Club's long-term financial strategy. The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting expertise, sound judgment, leadership experience, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Directs all financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, general ledger auditing, budgeting, and tax activities.
  • Develops, establishes, and administers financial procedures, systems, and effective internal controls to safeguard club assets.
  • Maintains and/or reviews all accounting records and analyzes statistical and accounting information.
  • Develop, monitor, and analyze the annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Support strategic planning and capital improvement initiatives through financial forecasting and analysis.
  • Assist department heads and managers with budget preparation and financial analysis
  • Prepares monthly trial balances and supporting schedules. Prepares financial statements, forecasts, and analyses for administrative and managerial functions.
  • Analyzes financial information, monitors budget versus actual expenditures and advises management on variances and corrective actions to improve operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Prepare financial reports and presentations monthly, quarterly and annually for the General Manager, Department Heads, and Board of Directors.
  • Evaluates operating results in terms of costs, revenues, budgets, and profit possibilities and provides recommendations to appropriate management personnel.
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and investment reporting.
  • Reconcile bank accounts daily and balance sheet accounts monthly.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including payroll, sales, and property taxes.
  • Coordinate any financial audits and serve as the primary liaison with auditors.
  • Oversee payroll processing and employee benefit accounting.
  • Monitor membership billing and collections to ensure timely revenue recognition.
Policy Development and Compliance
  • Formulates, receives, and recommends policy proposals for accounting, auditing, budgeting, revenue/cost control, payroll, and tax matters.
  • Ensure compliance with club policies, accounting principles (Tax or GAAP as appropriate), and applicable laws and regulations.
Internal Controls and Auditing
  • Manages and conducts internal audits to ensure accurate record-keeping and policy adherence.
  • Monitors procedures for effective receiving and storeroom control.
Staff Supervision and Development
  • Supervises accounting staff, human resources director, and the purchasing department staff, providing leadership, training, and performance management.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, counseling, and conducting or reviewing performance reviews for department employees
Payroll, Benefits, and Tax Administration
  • Works in conjunction with general manager and human resource director on employee benefits (401(k), insurance, vacation, etc.). Serves on the retirement committee making recommendations as a fiduciary. Prepares and/or assist with preparation of federal, state, and local tax returns. Oversees and monitors payroll preparation and payment.
Inventory and Asset Management
  • Ensure inventories for beverages, food, supplies, equipment, and furnishings are being performed and records adjustments to financial records
  • Ensures all insurance records for club property are properly maintained.
Interdepartmental Support
  • Inform and advise other department heads about the financial aspects of their responsibilities.
  • Serve as company contact for IT policy, procedures, and repair and maintenance issues.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.
  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least three years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting standards, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing monthly and annual financial statements for a multi-department organization.
  • Experience leading the annual departmental budgeting process, including developing, consolidating, reviewing, and presenting budgets across multiple departments.
  • Experience managing monthly and annual budgets for a complex, multidimensional operation, including monitoring performance, analyzing variances, and preparing financial forecasts.
  • Experience in hospitality, private clubs, golf clubs, resorts, or hotels preferred.
  • Experience with club management or accounting software is preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience serving as a liaison with an IT provider, including coordinating technical support, communicating operational needs, and assisting with IT policies, systems, security, and service issues, is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly present financial information to senior leadership, ownership, and committees.
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Compensation: $120,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
