What Does a Computer Science Professor Do?
A computer science professor teaches at a technical college or university. You create and teach courses in computer science (CS) or related programming or technology subjects. In this career, you prepare the syllabus for each class, deliver lectures and instructions, and use exams and quizzes to assess the performance of students. In many computer science classes, your responsibilities include allowing students to practice the subject matter in a computer lab. You facilitate this practice and offer guidance during lab sessions. In addition to your teaching duties, you sometimes give academic or career advice to students in CS degree programs.

What are some common challenges faced by Computer Science Professors in balancing teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities?
What is the difference between Computer Science Professor vs Software Developer?
| Aspect | Computer Science Professor | Software Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field | Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or related field; certifications optional |
| Work Environment | Academic institutions, research labs, universities | Corporate offices, tech companies, startups |
| Industry Usage | Research, teaching, academic publishing | Software development, product creation, coding |
| Common Search/Comparison | Yes | Yes |
While both roles involve computer science knowledge, a Computer Science Professor primarily focuses on teaching, research, and academic publishing, often requiring a Ph.D. and working in educational institutions. In contrast, a Software Developer applies programming skills to create software products in corporate or startup environments, typically with a bachelor's or master's degree. The roles differ in work environment, responsibilities, and career paths but share foundational computer science expertise.

Position Summary: The JCCC Electronics Technology department is seeking part-time (adjunct) instructors to teach courses in analog and digital electronics. Our program prepares students to work as electronic technicians. All our coursework combines classroom and hands-on laboratory experiences; critical thinking skills emphasized include troubleshooting and analysis.
Our digital electronics sequence covers a wide range of topics including binary and hexadecimal number systems, basic Boolean algebra, logic gates, registers, flip-flops, computer architecture, microprocessors, microcontrollers, embedded programming concepts, and analog/digital interfacing. The sequence culminates in a capstone experience where students implement a unique digital system centered around a microcontroller.
Applicants wishing to teach in the digital sequence must possess a strong knowledge of digital electronics and current computer architecture, especially embedded systems, along with practical experience in programming languages (assembly to C++) and development environments. Analog and mixed signal skills are essential.
Our analog sequence includes an introduction to the field, AC/DC circuit theory (with emphasis on analysis and troubleshooting), semiconductor devices, and electronic communication systems. The applicant needs a strong knowledge of passive devices, diodes, transistors, FETs and the ability to teach students how to analyze and troubleshoot circuits and systems using contemporary test equipment including meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and other related equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate in Applied Science degree.
- 5 or more years' experience in a related field.
- Ability to convey complex technical material to a diverse audience using a minimal mathematical approach (algebra/trigonometry).
- Ability to use electronic test equipment in troubleshooting of analog and digital circuitry to the component level.
- Familiarity with breadboarding using discrete and integrated circuitry.
- Ability to use soldering for both through-hole and surface mount (SMT) technologies.
- Ability to use appropriate safety measures for electronic maintenance and fabrication.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ISCET CETa certification.
- IPC 610 certification.
- Experience in prototyping systems and/or circuit board layout using Cadence OrCAD or a similar system.
- Ability to use simulation software (PSPICE core) to model circuit behavior.
- Ability to develop application solutions for microcontrollers/microprocessor systems using an integrated development environment (IDE) and specific toolchain.
- Ability to work in a mixed analog/digital environment including PCs and TCP/IP networking
compTIA A+ certification.
