Job description
Department: History, Criminal Justice and Political Science
Status: Full Time - 9 Month Position
Position Summary:
Position starts in August 2026, and it will be open until filled.
The tenure track Assistant Professor of History will work in the Department of History, Criminal Justice and Political Science within the College of Arts & Sciences. Ability to teach introductory courses in Western/Global Civilization is required. Field of specialization outside American or European History is preferred. The ability to develop topical courses in world history is also welcome. Not required, but a plus is a background in Public or Digital History or Teacher Education.
This faculty will have a 12-hr. teaching load each semester, determined by the Department Chair and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. This will generally be accomplished as a combination of four lecture classes.
As a History faculty, the assistant professor will provide guidance to the Department to maintain our accreditation and to help liaison with the other programs in the Department.
The faculty member will also perform academic advising as well as department, school, and university-wide service and committee work. The successful candidate will aid research with undergraduate students within the History program.
As a History faculty, the assistant professor will provide professional guidance to students pursuing careers related to History. Teaching experience, commitment to excellence, and an appreciation for liberal arts education as a faculty and support for the Christian Misson are required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide expertise for the department and work with the department to shape the History major
- Ability to demonstrate quality teaching in face-to-face courses required, experience with online modality a plus
- Service to the department in advisement, recruitment, and university committee assignment and other departmental shared priorities
- Continued research, conference presentations, and publication in the specialty field are encouraged and expected
- Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to: Title IX, and Information Security, FERPA, and other state and federal regulations
- Ability to support the Christian Mission of Campbell University
- Develop and implement curriculum, inclusive of departmental learning objectives, for in-person instruction; support assessment
- Evaluate student work, administer tests, assignments and other exercises that permit measurement of knowledge, abilities, and/or performance relative to the course learning objectives
- Support student accommodations outlined by Office of Student Success, Disability Services
- Complete student record keeping in a timely and accurate manner, including grades and attendance
- Follow guidelines for each course provided by department; use syllabi and policy templates; update and revise in collaboration with departmental colleagues
- Post grades as required by Registrar following procedures and policies; administer final exams according to university guidelines
- Maintain timely communications with students and staff at all times
- Interact with students in a positive manner, listen effectively, field questions pertaining to subject matter
- Participate in departmental, faculty and staff meetings as requested
- Exercise independent judgment and maintain strict confidentiality
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times
- Other duties, responsibilities and activities as assigned
Education/Experience:
- Ph.D. in History. ABD in final stages of completion considered
- Demonstrated teaching experience at university level required
- Experience in teaching History is preferred
- Experience in leading student research in History is preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to teach and lead in History
- Ability to communicate effectively to colleagues outside of specialization and collaborate effectively
- Strong computer skills and the ability to learn, utilize, or adapt to new and emerging technology
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and common methods of digital communication including web/text/chat platforms
- Commitment to professional development and engagement in the specialization
- Knowledge of Blackboard Ultra Learning Management System or ability to learn Blackboard
- Ability to adapt to changing student needs
- Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with, faculty, staff, students, university officials and the public
- Exercise independent judgement and maintain strict confidentiality as necessary
- Ability to work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people
- This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University
