Job Description
General Statement of Duties:
This is a responsible and technical position necessary to provide technical assistance to computer users. This position is responsible for basic troubleshooting, installation and configuration of hardware and software. Works under the direction of the Network Technician, Computer Network Engineer, and/or management.
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
Performs technical information system functions.
Examples of Work:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
  • Troubleshoot and replace hardware or software.
  • Install hardware or software and verify correct installation.
  • Provide basic hardware or software training.
  • Provide technical assistance to computer system users either in person or by telephone.
  • Works in support of more senior technical personnel by performing all aspects of hardware and software configuration.
  • May receive, log and track trouble calls.
  • Log all steps of problem resolution in technician work order system.
  • Provide quality customer service by researching and solving problems with tools available.
  • Prepare faulty equipment for shipment to vendors, including appropriate paper work.
  • Ensure proper backup procedures are followed on LANs and WANs.
  • Perform all tape backup functions.
  • Maintain printer cartridge inventory.
  • Perform preventative maintenance as scheduled by Computer Network Engineer or Network Technician.
  • Assists with the repair of desktop computers, printers, and other computer-related peripherals.
  • Meet deadlines on tasks and assignments based on priorities and estimates provided by senior technical personnel.
  • Maintain schedule and meet deadlines on multiple longer-term projects or assignments in the face of a heavy short-term workload.
  • Communicate effectively through various contact with the City of Canton's internal/external customers to ensure successful problem resolution.
  • Exhibit effective writing communication skills through work order logs, correspondence and documented procedures.
  • Keep abreast of professional developments in the field by reading and studying trade magazines, attending training seminars, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requires knowledge of computer equipment, printers, and other computer related peripherals. Requires working knowledge of Windows and other City supported software. Ability to install and execute PC software packages. Knowledge of basic concepts of networking. Basic knowledge of local networks and the devices used to connect/support them. Requires an understanding of backup/recovery procedures on LANs and WANs. Must be self-motivated and capable of utilizing current tools and practices to solve problems and recommend solutions. Ability to meet objectives and deadlines while handling an extremely heavy workload. Ability to regularly operate under deadlines, extreme workloads and stressful conditions. Ability to keep current with new technical developments in the information systems field. Requires excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to provide technical assistance to computer users. Ability to present ideas effectively, orally and in writing, and prepare technical reports.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City departments, various agencies and the general public. Ability to provide guidance to less experienced co-workers to support their training and development, and to effectively transfer knowledge within the department as well as to internal customers and suppliers. Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license at all times. Must have the ability to read, write, use a computer keyboard, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Acceptable Training & Experience:
Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Electronics, Computer Science or related business field. In lieu of a formal education, 2 years recent and relevant experience in Information Systems that provide the required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience.
