How much do computer engineering jobs pay per year?

As of May 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for computer engineering in Indiana is $115,630.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $106,100.00 and $125,100.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in computer architecture, hardware and software design, and at least a bachelor's degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as C/C++ or Python), hardware description languages (like VHDL or Verilog), and tools like MATLAB or CAD software is common, and certifications like Cisco or CompTIA can be beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting technical issues. These skills and qualifications are essential for designing innovative computing solutions, ensuring reliable system performance, and succeeding in multidisciplinary engineering environments.

How do computer engineers typically collaborate with other departments in a tech company?

Computer engineers often work closely with software developers, hardware designers, and product managers to bring complex systems to life. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to align on project goals, troubleshooting cross-disciplinary issues, and integrating hardware and software components. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as computer engineers must translate technical requirements and constraints between teams to ensure a smooth development process. This collaborative environment helps broaden your skill set and exposes you to various aspects of product development.

What is computer engineering?

Computer engineering is a field that combines principles of electrical engineering and computer science to design, develop, and maintain computer systems and hardware. Computer engineers work on both the hardware (such as processors, circuit boards, and memory devices) and the software that runs on these systems. Their work enables the creation of everything from smartphones and laptops to complex embedded systems in cars and medical devices. Computer engineering can also involve research, innovation, and improving the efficiency and performance of computers and related technologies.

What is the difference between Computer Engineering vs Computer Science?

AspectComputer EngineeringComputer Science

Job description

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rose-Hulman is searching for an inspiring educator who shares our passion for transforming the lives of undergraduates to fill the role of a one-year Full-Time Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2026-2027 academic year. Our teaching-focused mission is "to provide students with the world's best undergraduate science, engineering, and mathematics education in an environment of individual attention and support." If this resonates with you, and you want to positively impact the lives of future engineers, then we think you'll love what we have to offer.

The department consists of nineteen faculty and offers two degrees, a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and B.S. in Computer Engineering. Both degrees are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET and ranked as top programs in the country for institutions without Ph.D. programs.

Rose-Hulman has an average class size of 20-25 students per section, so there is an opportunity to get to know your students and hone your teaching strategy to maximize their learning. We are a collegial and supportive department that is committed to helping you achieve success with new course preparation.

Requirements include a doctorate or near completion in electrical or computer engineering or closely related field. The department and the institute also place a high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups, and candidates from these groups are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates who can further broaden and enhance the educational experience of our students, especially with prior industrial experience, are also encouraged to apply.

Essential job responsibilities include teaching and service to the department and Institute for a full academic year. While not an essential responsibility of the Visiting position, professional development is encouraged and supported with limited funds. Applicants in all areas of electrical and computer engineering will be considered; those with potential for or demonstrated ability to teach AC/DC circuits courses and labs are preferred. Most of our classes include a hands-on laboratory component that is also taught by the class instructor. The anticipated start date is August 2026.

Applicants should submit the following information via https://jobs.rose-hulman.edu:

  • a CV/resume,
  • cover letter, and
  • a statement of teaching philosophy.

Additional information about Rose-Hulman's ECE department is available at https://www.rose-hulman.edu/ece. Detailed information is available from Mario Simoni, Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering, simoni@rose-hulman.edu, (812) 877-8341. Initial review of completed applications will begin April 15, 2026. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Applications:Only online applications/resumes submitted via the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Employment Opportunities website, jobs.rose-hulman.edu, will be accepted until the position is filled.
