Internship Pcb Layout Engineer information

What does an Internship PCB Layout Engineer do?

An Internship PCB Layout Engineer assists in designing and creating printed circuit board (PCB) layouts for electronic devices. They work under the supervision of experienced engineers to translate circuit schematics into PCB layouts using specialized software. Their responsibilities often include component placement, routing signal traces, ensuring design for manufacturability, and reviewing the layout for compliance with industry standards. This role provides hands-on experience with electronic design automation (EDA) tools and helps interns understand the practical aspects of electronics engineering. It's a valuable opportunity for students to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world engineering practices.

What is the difference between Internship Pcb Layout Engineer vs PCB Design Engineer?

AspectInternship Pcb Layout EngineerPCB Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed relevant degree; no mandatory certificationsUsually requires a degree in electronics or related field; certifications like IPC CID are a plus
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in a corporate or manufacturing environment, supervised and learning-focusedFull-time professional role, responsible for designing and testing PCB layouts
Industry UsageCommon in electronics manufacturing, startups, and training programsEstablished in electronics, aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronics industries

The main difference between an Internship Pcb Layout Engineer and a PCB Design Engineer lies in experience level and responsibilities. Internships are entry-level, focused on learning and supporting design tasks, while PCB Design Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for creating and optimizing PCB layouts independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship PCB Layout Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship PCB Layout Engineer, you need a basic understanding of electronics, circuit design principles, and familiarity with PCB layout concepts, usually supported by coursework or a relevant engineering degree in progress. Experience with industry-standard EDA tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or KiCAD is typically required, and knowledge of design standards like IPC is beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with engineering teams and ensuring accurate designs. These abilities are important because they ensure reliable, manufacturable PCB layouts that meet project specifications and support overall product quality.

What types of projects and tasks can an Internship PCB Layout Engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Internship PCB Layout Engineer, you can expect to assist in designing and modifying printed circuit board (PCB) layouts using CAD tools under the guidance of senior engineers. Typical tasks include creating schematic diagrams, placing and routing components, reviewing design rules, and preparing documentation for manufacturing. You’ll likely collaborate closely with hardware engineers and manufacturing teams, gaining hands-on experience with real projects and exposure to industry-standard practices. This role provides valuable insight into the full product development lifecycle and can open up further opportunities in PCB design, electronics engineering, or related fields.

Job description

Overview

Working across the globe, V2X builds smart solutions designed to integrate physical and digital infrastructure from base to battlefield. We bring 120 years of successful mission support to improve security, streamline logistics, and enhance readiness. Aligned around a shared purpose, our $4.5B company and 16,000 people work alongside our clients, here and abroad, to tackle their most complex challenges with integrity, respect, responsibility, and professionalism.

Vertex, located in Indianapolis, IN, is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer I to support development, integration, and sustainment of groundbased electronic systems that combine COTS embedded computers, power conversion for battery and shore power, and missionspecific electronics.

This role will own design and integration tasks from requirements through lab verification and production support. The engineer will specify and integrate COTS embedded systems, define and implement power architectures for ground equipment, perform schematic capture and analysis, collaborate with PCB layout engineers, and support bringup and debug of circuit cards and integrated units. The position requires a high degree of initiative, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work both independently and as part of an Electrical Hardware Development Team in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Own electrical design tasks from requirements through release for groundbased electronic assemblies.
  • Specify, select, and integrate COTS embedded systems and industrial computers into larger architectures.
  • Define and implement power trees for systems using both battery and shore power, including regulation, protection, and sequencing.
  • Perform schematic capture, component selection, and design documentation using ECAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer).
  • Collaborate with PCB layout engineers to ensure signal integrity, power integrity, EMI/EMC, creepage/clearance, and manufacturability requirements are met.
  • Plan and execute boardlevel bringup, including staged poweron, basic functional checks, and data collection.
  • Use lab equipment (oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, electronic loads) to verify performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • Perform circuit modeling and analysis using SPICE tools and analytical tools such as MATLAB, Mathcad, and Excel.
  • Support root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations for boardlevel and integration issues.
  • Contribute to design reviews, test planning, and risk/issue tracking within crossfunctional teams.
  • Support production and sustainment activities, including troubleshooting manufacturing defects and contributing to design improvements.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related STEM field.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional electrical engineering experience or 3+ years with a relevant Master’s degree (MSEE, MSCE, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • Systemlevel design implementation for electronic hardware.
    • Specification, selection, and integration of COTS embedded systems or industrial computers.
    • Power conversion and distribution for groundbased equipment using both battery and shore power sources.
