Common Search & ComparisonComponent EngineeringMechanical Design

Component Engineering focuses on selecting, testing, and managing individual parts and components used in products, ensuring they meet specifications and standards. Mechanical Design involves creating detailed designs and models of mechanical systems and parts. While both roles require engineering knowledge and often overlap in product development, Component Engineering emphasizes component quality and standards, whereas Mechanical Design centers on the overall design and functionality of mechanical systems.

What is component engineering?

Component engineering is a specialized field within engineering that focuses on the selection, validation, and management of individual parts or components used in larger products or systems. Component engineers ensure that each component meets technical, quality, and regulatory requirements, and they work closely with design, manufacturing, and procurement teams to resolve issues and optimize performance. Their responsibilities often include evaluating new parts, managing component obsolescence, and maintaining documentation to support product reliability and compliance.

How much does a component engineer make?

A component engineer at Lockheed Martin typically earns between $70,000 and $110,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. The role often requires knowledge of engineering tools and standards, with opportunities for advancement and certification. Salaries can vary based on specific project responsibilities and seniority levels.
