What you’ll do:

At SCA, you’ll play a key role in driving our mission to keep communities clean and safe across the country. As an Employee Relations (ER) Specialist in the Human Resources Department, you’ll help shape operations, support our dedicated field teams, and deliver critical services that make a visible impact every day. Whether you're leading people, optimizing processes, or providing essential support, your work will contribute directly to our success—and to the communities we proudly serve.

Your daily impact:

The job responsibilities below outline the core duties and expectations of a position, providing clarity on how the role supports Company goals. However, this is not an exhaustive list, and as business needs evolve, your responsibilities may shift over time to reflect new priorities, processes, or technologies:

  • Employee Relations Case Management: Serve as the first point of contact for HR cases, providing timely and consistent responses to employee relations inquiries and escalating complex issues as appropriate.
  • Investigations & Documentation: Conduct investigations documenting findings and providing recommendations on cases.
  • Policy Interpretation & Guidance: Provide clear guidance to managers and employees on Company policies, standards, and employee relations best practices.
  • Compliance Training Administration: Coordinate, track, and follow up on required compliance training programs, ensuring deadlines and standards are met.
  • Training Content Support: Partner with HR, Legal, and Compliance teams to update and maintain training materials in alignment with new laws and policy changes.
  • Legal & Records Requests: Manage personnel file requests, subpoena responses, unemployment claims, and other legal documentation requests while maintaining confidentiality and data privacy.
  • Document Management: Maintain organized, compliant records in accordance with HR data retention and documentation requirements.
  • Quarterly ER Review Leadership: Lead the quarterly employee relations review process, including data collection, analysis, and preparation of insights for HR leadership.
  • Trend Analysis & Reporting: Identify patterns in case types, performance actions, turnover, and compliance issues to inform proactive interventions.
  • Process & Policy Improvement: Recommend enhancements to policies, procedures, and workflows based on ER trends, case themes, and organizational needs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with HR, Legal, Compliance, and Operations partners to ensure alignment on ER issues, investigations, litigations, emerging risks, and recommended actions.
  • Change Management & Communication Support: Support communications related to policy updates, compliance reminders, and ER programs to strengthen organizational consistency.
  • Risk Mitigation: Apply sound judgment and employment law knowledge to reduce organizational risk and ensure fair, consistent employee treatment, escalating issues to the Legal Department where appropriate.

Minimum job requirements:

Minimum job qualifications define the essential skills, experience, and abilities needed to succeed in the role. They set the baseline for hiring but may evolve as the job and business requirements change:

  • Experience: 2 years of employee relations experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field

Skills & Competencies:

Skills and competencies define the abilities and behaviors essential for success in the role. They guide performance expectations and may evolve as the role, team, or business priorities change.

  • Employee Relations Expertise: Applies employee relations & accommodation principles to ensure fair, consistent, and compliant issue resolution.
  • Investigation & Documentation: Conducts thorough investigations and produces clear, accurate findings and recommendations.
  • Communication & Influence: Communicates with clarity, builds trust, and guides managers through sensitive or complex matters.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Identifies trends, assesses risks, and provides actionable insights that inform proactive interventions.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Evaluates situations objectively and makes sound, well-reasoned decisions in high-risk or ambiguous scenarios.
