Job description

Position: Community Organizer

Department: Community Engagement Program

Location(s): Upper Manhattan, with frequent travel to Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island

Reports To: Program Manager

Classification: Fulltime, Non-Exempt

Work Model: Hybrid

Compensation: $30.22/hour, non-negotiable


Established by Black and Latina activists in 1984, the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) is NYC's only culturally specific organization with a mission to address domestic and sexual violence within Latine communities. We provide intensive support and services to 3,500+ survivors and children every year and reach 10,000+ community members through community events and preventive education workshops. We are dedicated to developing innovative programs that meet the complex needs of our diverse community and that align with our organizational values.


The Community Organizer works within the Community Engagement Program and reports to the Program Manager. This position promotes community awareness of domestic and sexual violence and advances survivor-led efforts to prevent gender-based violence through outreach, education, leadership development, and strategic partnerships. The Community Organizer coordinates VIP's Promotoras (survivor leaders) program, providing political education and leadership opportunities that strengthen community engagement and advocacy. Working collaboratively across programs, the Community Organizer also connects community members to resources, supports educational campaigns and messaging, and builds partnerships with community organizations, institutions, and elected officials to expand VIP's impact and reach.


Essential Functions

Promotora Leadership Program

  • Manage and expand VIP's Promotora Leadership Program.
  • Design and facilitate leadership development, political education, and advocacy trainings for Promotoras.
  • Coordinate Promotoras' participation in outreach, community events and advocacy activities.
  • Convene regular meetings, distribute outreach, and provide program updates and materials.
  • Collaborate with VIP programs to identify and engage survivors interested in leadership opportunities.


Community Engagement and Partnership Building

    • Develop and implement strategic outreach to increase community awarenessof domestic and sexual violenceand access to VIP services.
    • Build andmaintainpartnerships with community organizations, elected officials, schools, consulates, community boards, and other stakeholders.
    • Represent VIP at community events, meetings, health fairs, rallies, and other public forums.
    • Deliver presentations and workshops in English and Spanish to community members, service providers, and partner organizations.


    Collaboration and Administration

    • CollaborateacrossVIP programs to develop and implement community education, outreach, and awareness initiatives.
    • Maintainaccurateoutreach, partnerships, and community engagementactivities inorganizational databases and reporting systems.
    • Participate in supervision, staff meetings, program meetings, organizationalevents,and special projects.
    • Support fundraisingeffortsand other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications

    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in community organizing, leadershipdevelopment,and/or group facilitation.
    • Spoken and written fluency in Spanish and English
    • Experience working with diverse communities, particularly with Latinxcommunity.
    • Knowledge of issuesimpactingimmigrant communities and familiarity with the gender-based violence movement, including domestic and sexual violence systems.
    • Must have excellentpublic speaking, relationship building,facilitationand community engagement skills.
    • Strong organizational, project management,prioritization,and problem-solving skills.
    • Demonstrated commitment tosurvivor leadership andpeer-to-peerapproaches to communityand cultural change.
    • Commitment to cultural humility, continuous learning, and trauma informed practice.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, survivors, community partners, and public stakeholders while also working independently.
    • Availabilityto work evenings and weekends;
    • AbilitytotravelthroughoutNYC using public transportation andlift upto 30lbs. of outreach materials.
    • Proficiencyin Microsoft Office, databases, virtualplatforms,and other standard office technology.


    Compensation & Benefits

    • Full-time, non-exempt position, working 35 hours per week with a pay rate of $55,000/year.
    • VIP covers 90% of medical insurance premium costs for employees and their families.
