Job description

Position Overview

The Financial Controller will lead all accounting and financial control functions for a growing third-party logistics (3PL) organization. This role is responsible for overseeing budget allocation, P&L management, balance sheet integrity, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance, while supporting strategic decision-making in a fast-paced, margin-driven logistics environment.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, operational finance experience, and a deep understanding of logistics, transportation, or high-volume service businesses.


Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Reporting
  • Own and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes

  • Prepare and analyze company-wide P&Ls, balance sheets, and cash flow statements

  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial statements in accordance with GAAP

  • Develop and maintain financial reporting packages for executive leadership

Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts

  • Monitor budget vs. actuals and provide variance analysis with actionable insights

  • Partner with operations and leadership to allocate budgets across departments, terminals, and cost centers

  • Support pricing, margin analysis, and lane-level profitability where applicable

Accounting Operations
  • Oversee AP, AR, payroll, revenue recognition, and general ledger

  • Ensure proper accounting for:

    • Freight revenue and accessorials

    • Accruals and prepaid expenses

    • Fuel, carrier payables, and commissions

  • Manage intercompany accounting if applicable

Controls, Compliance & Audit
  • Establish and maintain internal controls and accounting policies

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

  • Coordinate and manage external audits, tax filings, and year-end reporting

  • Serve as primary point of contact for auditors and tax advisors

Cash Flow & Risk Management
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, working capital, and credit exposure

  • Oversee customer credit policies and collections strategy

  • Assist with banking relationships, covenants, and financial agreements

Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting/finance team

  • Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Sales, HR, and Executive Leadership

  • Provide financial insight to support strategic initiatives, growth, and acquisitions


QualificationsRequired
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • 4+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience

  • Controller or Assistant Controller experience preferred

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting

  • Experience in logistics, transportation, 3PL, or similar service-based industry

  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with ERP/accounting systems

Preferred
  • CPA or CMA

  • Experience supporting high-growth or multi-location organizations

  • Exposure to asset-based and non-asset logistics models

  • Experience with commission structures and revenue recognition in logistics
