What does a commercial construction manager do?

A Commercial Construction Manager oversees and coordinates the construction of commercial buildings, such as offices, retail centers, and warehouses. Their responsibilities include managing budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and compliance with safety and building codes. They serve as the main point of contact between clients, architects, engineers, and construction crews to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. This role requires strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.

What are some common challenges faced by commercial construction managers during large-scale projects?

Commercial Construction Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating multiple subcontractors, adhering to tight project timelines, and managing budget constraints. Effective communication is crucial, as managers must regularly liaise with architects, engineers, and clients to resolve design or scheduling conflicts. Additionally, adapting to unexpected changes—like weather delays or supply chain disruptions—requires strong problem-solving skills and flexibility. These challenges make the role both demanding and rewarding for those who thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commercial construction manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commercial Construction Manager, you need strong project management, budgeting, and construction knowledge, typically supported by a degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with construction management software (such as Procore or Buildertrend), scheduling tools, and safety certifications like OSHA 30 are commonly required. Excellent leadership, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help you effectively coordinate teams and resolve on-site challenges. These competencies are crucial to ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to client specifications while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Vice President of Commercial Construction to lead its expanding commercial construction operations in South Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Our client is a well-established and rapidly growing commercial construction organization with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality commercial projects throughout Wisconsin. As the company continues to grow, leadership is making a significant investment in strengthening its commercial construction division by adding an accomplished executive who can lead operations, develop people, and help shape the organization's long-term strategic direction.

This newly created executive leadership opportunity will serve as the senior operational leader for the commercial construction division, providing oversight of operations, financial performance, project execution, safety, quality, and long-term strategic planning. Reporting directly to executive leadership, the successful candidate will work closely with project management, estimating, field operations, and executive leadership to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, profitably, and to the highest standards of quality.

Success in this role requires balancing strategic leadership with operational excellence. The Vice President will play an integral role in improving organizational performance, strengthening operational processes, mentoring future leaders, and positioning the company for continued growth. This individual will have significant influence over business strategy while helping build the systems, teams, and culture necessary to support the organization's continued expansion.

The company places a high value on leadership, integrity, collaboration, and long-term relationships. While strong commercial construction experience is essential, they are equally focused on identifying an executive who develops people, builds accountability, earns trust, and creates a culture where employees and customers alike want to remain for the long term.

This is a full-time, on-site executive leadership position based in South Green Bay, Wisconsin. Relocation assistance may be considered for exceptional candidates.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished commercial construction executive who wants more than another operations role. • Foster a culture centered on accountability, collaboration, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor organizational performance and identify opportunities for operational improvements.

  • Strong strategic planning and business leadership skills.
