Does COBOL have a future?

COBOL managers oversee legacy systems that still run many financial and government applications. While new development in COBOL is limited, demand for professionals maintaining and updating existing systems remains stable due to the continued reliance on COBOL-based infrastructure. Knowledge of mainframe environments and integration with modern tools can enhance job prospects in this field.

What are COBOL Managers?

COBOL Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams that develop, maintain, and support applications written in the COBOL programming language. They manage project timelines, allocate resources, and ensure that legacy systems remain efficient and aligned with business goals. In addition to technical expertise in COBOL, they often coordinate between IT staff and business stakeholders to implement updates or resolve system issues. Their role is crucial in industries such as banking, insurance, and government, where COBOL systems remain integral to core operations.

Are COBOL jobs still in demand?

COBOL manager roles are still in demand in industries like banking and finance that rely on legacy mainframe systems. These jobs often require knowledge of mainframe environments, COBOL programming, and system maintenance, with some positions offering stable employment due to the ongoing need for legacy system support.

What businesses still use COBOL?

Many financial institutions, government agencies, and large corporations continue to use COBOL for core legacy systems due to its stability and reliability. COBOL developers and managers are often needed to maintain and update these systems, which are critical for banking, insurance, and public sector operations.

Familiarity with mainframe environments like IBM z/OS, project management tools, and certifications such as PMP or ITIL are commonly required.
