The US West Client Development Director is responsible for the growth and success of HDR's healthcare architecture practice within the west region. This role focuses on driving client development, strengthening relationships with key clients and partners, and supporting major pursuits.

This position works closely with the West Region Health Directors, Health Principals, National Development Director, Business Development Coordinator and marketing teams to identify opportunities, position HDR effectively, and advance pursuits from early identification through selection.


Key Responsibilities:


Business Development and Opportunity Management

  • Identify, track, and advance regional business development opportunities aligned with Health Sector goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate with West Region Health Directors, National Development Director and Health Principals to develop and execute regional business development plans, including target clients, pursuits, and outreach strategies.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of regional market conditions, client initiatives, and upcoming procurement activity.

Client Development and Industry Engagement

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key clients, including both individual facilities and health systems / institutions throughout the region.
  • Lead, Support, and participate in client engagement activities, including meetings, industry events, and follow-up coordination.
  • Manage key client accounts in partnership with West Region Health Directors and Health Principals.
  • Lead and/or support the maintenance of CRM data, client development plans, and relationship tracking, with support from the Business Development Coordinator.
  • Represent HDR at regional industry organizations, as well as regional and national conferences and networking events.
  • Participate in and support thought leadership initiatives, speaking engagements, and local brand-building efforts

Premarketing and Pursuits

  • Lead pursuit strategy development, capture planning, and positioning for key health pursuits, with support from the Business Development Coordinator.
  • Contribute to proposal and pursuit efforts including messaging, resumes, project narratives, and win themes, ensuring alignment with client priorities.
  • Coordinate closely with, and provide coaching to, marketing and technical teams on proposals, qualifications, and interview preparation.
  • In collaboration with West Region Health Directors, develop strategy and content for internal communications, including annual meetings, regional business development calls/meetings and knowledge sharing initiatives involving key target clients
  • In collaboration with West Region Health Directors, develop content for special-purpose presentations such as roadshows, cross-sector events, and corporate events for key target clients.
  • Support mentoring and coordination of junior marketing or business development staff, as appropriate.

Accountability and Reporting

  • Annual Market Sector Planning (NFB Goals) - Collaborate with the West Region Health Director and Health Principals on annual NFB planning for key accounts.
  • CRM/Fee Forecasting - Review and coordinate CRM data and fee forecasting with Pursuit Specialists for key accounts, with support from the Business Development Coordinator.
  • Monthly Reporting - Partner with the National Development Director and Health Principals to provide regular reporting on pursuit activity and progress for key target clients.
 
Preferred Qualifications 
 
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or closely related field
  • Knowledge and experience within the local and regional health markets.
  • Capable of leading a health team and making client presentations.  
  • Proven business development experience in health design industry.  
  • Willing to travel.

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of 15 years relevant industry experience
  • Demonstrated "self-starter" with a history of completing projects with limited oversight
  • Deep knowledge of the A/E/C industry's standard approach to procurement of professional services
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire others
  • Demonstrated ability to build a network of clients and industry partners
  • Experience in sales and developing effective win strategies
  • Strong financial acumen and negotiation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability and desire to travel and engage with others in-person
  • Demonstrated experience in growing programs in new or highly competitive markets
  • Demonstrated experience in winning high-value contracts in the A/E/C industry
  • Demonstrated experience in writing compelling content based on information from technical staff
