Employer & Industry UsageInsurance companies, training roles for entry-level claims positionsInsurance companies, claims departments, adjusting claims for damages or losses

Claims Adjusters handle actual claims, assess damages, and make settlement decisions. While Claims Trainees are in a learning phase, Claims Adjusters are responsible for managing claims independently once trained.

What are Claims Trainees?

Claims Trainees are entry-level professionals in the insurance industry who are learning how to evaluate, process, and settle insurance claims. They typically work under the supervision of experienced adjusters or managers and receive on-the-job training to understand company policies, claims procedures, and relevant legal regulations. Claims Trainees investigate claims, communicate with policyholders, and gradually take on more responsibility as they gain experience. This role is often a starting point for a career in claims adjusting or insurance management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Claims Trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Claims Trainee, you need a bachelor's degree (often in business or a related field), analytical thinking, and basic knowledge of insurance principles. Familiarity with claims management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and sometimes industry certifications such as AIC (Associate in Claims) is beneficial. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a customer-oriented mindset are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately evaluating claims, ensuring customer satisfaction, and supporting efficient claims resolution.

What are some common challenges a Claims Trainee might face during their initial training period?

As a Claims Trainee, one common challenge is quickly understanding complex insurance policies and regulations while handling real claims. Trainees often need to develop strong attention to detail and effective communication skills to gather information from claimants and collaborate with more experienced adjusters. Balancing training sessions, shadowing opportunities, and managing a growing caseload can feel overwhelming at first. However, most organizations provide mentorship and structured support to help trainees build confidence and proficiency as they progress.

Job Summary (Start here)
LevelUP is a paid, full-time training program designed to launch your career as a Claims Professional. This is not a temporary program or a "helper" role-it's a structured pathway that prepares you to grow into a professional Workers' Compensation Claims Adjuster/Claim Representative role.
In simple terms: you'll learn how to help employees who are injured at work navigate the claim process, communicate with people involved, gather information, document decisions, and keep things moving forward-accurately, timely, and with care.
LevelUP generally takes 12-18 months and includes:
  • Guided learning (eCourses and structured training)
  • Work shadowing and hands-on practice
  • Mentoring from experienced professionals
  • Regular feedback and skill assessments
As you progress, you'll take on more responsibility and build the skills needed to move into a higher-level claims role.

Responsibilities
What You'll Do in the Program (What your day-to-day looks like)
Your responsibilities grow as you progress through the program. You'll start by learning systems and foundational tasks, then gradually move into handling claims work with support and mentoring.
In the early phase, you will:
  • Learn CCMSI systems and everyday tools (email/calendar, shared drives, claim systems)
  • Process incoming documents and bills
  • Complete required forms and claim paperwork
  • Communicate by phone and email with people involved in a claim (injured employees, medical offices, employers, attorneys)
  • Support experienced Claims Professionals by assisting on claim files

As you grow in the program, you will learn to:
  • Set up new claims and gather key information
  • Make required contact with involved parties promptly (injured employee, employer, medical providers)
  • Conduct basic claim investigations and document findings clearly
  • Build action plans, track deadlines, and move claims forward
  • Work with a mentor and take on a growing claim workload as your skills develop
  • Prepare for and (if required for the work you're assigned) pass a state licensing exam

By the later phases, you may:
  • Manage a larger group of active claim files with increased independence
  • Participate in claim reviews and legal reviews as part of your learning
  • Complete advanced best-practices training and prepare for promotion
