Cisco Telecom Engineer I

Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Network Engineer I is part of the network infrastructure team that is responsible for design, administration, and support for our enterprise infrastructure operations. This Engineer will provide customer service and technical support to internal staff and external vendors. This position supports local and wide-area network issues that include routers and switches.
The Network Engineer I assist with network capacity planning to meet network requirements and network growth. This Engineer communicates with customers to guarantee all concerns and issues are resolved in a timely manner. This position includes installation, monitoring, maintenance, and support of all network related hardware and software in an enterprise data, voice, and wireless network configuration.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Assist engineers implementing the campus wide infrastructure for data, voice, and wireless services following industry standards and best practices to ensure high availability and scalability through network design principals. Supports level II and III's in network installation, administration, and maintenance of the enterprise network.
  • Performs as a subject matter expert (SME) providing 1st level support for all network operations performance, security and capacity related incidents. Primary point of contact for technical issues escalated from the LAN admin staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining service availability of mission critical services ensuring 24/7/365 uptime of network systems. Collaborates with other engineers to support and ensure high availability of critical medical systems.
  • Monitors network performance and capacity utilizing network tools and system logs and proactively resolves any issues. Able to resolve network layer configurations and issues to support day to day network operations.
  • Maintains documentation including networking diagrams and network services descriptions for the LAN. Writes processes and procedures for installation and configuration of network systems or troubleshooting of network communications hardware or software.
  • Demonstrates the ability to implement new technologies. Practical hands on support of network routers, switches, and wireless controllers. Displays a thorough level of understanding of the OSI network model and a practical level of experience implementing TCP/IP services, including DNS, DHCP, HTTP, SSH, and SNMP.
  • Displays knowledge and understanding of networking protocols and technologies including IP, OSPF, EIGRP and technologies including Switching and Routing. Installs network hardware in multiple data centers, administration buildings, and remote ambulatory locations.
  • Acts as escalation contact for level I working on complex network break/fix and/or maintenance assignments related to network access, capacity or performance.
  • Keeps abreast and informed of current IT technologies and new trends in the industry by attending vendor training and product launch events.
  • Ensures approved procedures, policies, and industry best practices are followed.
  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitors and executes in line with department change control processes.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate
  • 2 or more years to 4 years of experience in network administration (in a multi-site organization is preferred) including hands-on experience one or more of the following: Network device configuration and management, routing protocols, data center connectivity, and network hardware installation.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Arts in IT or related field

Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • ITIL Foundation
  • Cisco Certified Network Associates
