R&D Telecom Lab Support Technician - Telecom Lab Operations

Location: Plano, TX
Assignment Type: Long-term

Schedule: Full-time, standard business hours with flexibility based on lab support needs

We are seeking a hands-on R&D Lab Support Technician to support daily operations and maintenance of a high-functioning telecommunications lab in Plano. This lab supports a broad range of telecom environments, including leading-edge cloud and VoIP gateways, legacy Nortel switching platforms, and supporting infrastructure across multiple technologies.

This role is ideal for candidates with telecom field experience, commissioning, installations, lab operations, or central office support backgrounds. Candidates with prior commissioner or telecom installation experience will align especially well with this opportunity.

The ideal candidate is technically curious, mechanically capable, and comfortable working across both legacy and modern telecommunications systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day support and timely resolution for lab user requests
  • Support maintenance and troubleshooting of telecom lab infrastructure
  • Debug complex telecommunications systems across legacy and modern platforms
  • Perform fresh operating system installs including RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu, and other LINUX environments
  • Rack mount telecommunications equipment and support hardware deployment
  • Maintain and update lab inventory tracking systems and databases
  • Monitor lab AC and DC power usage
  • Monitor cooling systems and environmental conditions within the lab
  • Ensure lab workspaces remain clean, organized, and 'tour ready' at all times
  • Support infrastructure related to VoIP gateways, legacy Nortel systems, and telecom switching platforms
  • Assist with network and telecom cabling installation and organization
  • Work safely with hand tools, equipment installation, and elevated work areas

Required Qualifications

  • Strong PC proficiency and comfort working in a Windows environment
  • Experience installing and supporting operating systems
  • Experience maintaining inventory databases or asset tracking systems
  • Basic understanding of network cabling including:
    • Ethernet
    • 1G and 10G copper cabling
    • Fiber optic cabling
  • Basic understanding of telephony including:
    • Tip and Ring
    • POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service)
  • Basic understanding of telecommunications cabling standards including:
    • BIX
    • DSX
  • Basic understanding of TDM carrier systems including:
    • DS1
    • DS3
  • Basic understanding of synchronization and timing
  • Basic understanding of DC power systems, batteries, and grounding
  • Comfortable using hand tools including screwdrivers, wire cutters, drills, and similar tools
  • Comfortable working at heights
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset and willingness to learn both legacy and emerging technologies

Preferred Background

  • Telecom commissioning experience
  • Installation technician background
  • Central office telecom support experience
  • Ribbon, Nortel, or legacy telecom platform exposure
  • Field service or telecom infrastructure support experience
  • Experience supporting lab operations in an R&D or engineering environment

Ideal Candidate Profile

This role is best suited for someone with commissioner-type telecom experience who understands both field installations and technical lab environments. Candidates who have supported telecom infrastructure, switching platforms, or carrier systems and can work independently with strong attention to detail will be highly successful in this position.
