Job description

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is an ecumenical fellowship of churches founded in 1948, in Geneva, Switzerland.  It brings together 356 member churches from all over the world, including Orthodox churches, Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, and Reformed denominations, to promote Christian unity in faith, witness, and service for a just and peaceful world.

Beyond its headquarters in Geneva, the WCC maintains a presence in New York as a strategic hub for global engagement. While the WCC already carries out advocacy work at the United Nations in Geneva, the Ecumenical Office to the United Nations (EOUN) in New York serves a distinct and complementary function: it not only facilitates sustained engagement with the UN system but also plays a key coordination role with ecumenical and interfaith partners, church-related organizations, and other civil society entities based in New York. At a time when the future of multilateralism faces profound uncertainty, the WCC remains steadfast in its commitment to the UN framework for advancing peace, justice, and human dignity—while equally committed to strengthening the ecumenical network that supports and amplifies this work.

In order to reinforce advocacy at the United Nations, build strategic bridges with Washington, DC–based multilateral and policy institutions—including the World Bank and the IMF—deepen the involvement of churches in the United States in the multilateral system, and enhance coordination with ecumenical partners across New York, the WCC is looking for a:

Coordinator for the Ecumenical Office to the United Nations (EOUN) in New York, in charge of Advocacy Work at 100%

This position reports to the Director of the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA), in close coordination with the Programme Director.

The successful candidate will:
• Serve as the primary facilitator for deepening coordination among ecumenical advocacy partners at the UN, ensuring joint strategies, shared messaging, and collaborative action within the New York-based ecumenical and faith-based community.
• Represent the WCC at the United Nations and other multilateral/intergovernmental forums and organisations in New York and Washington DC.
• Monitor and analyse UN and International Financial Institutions processes and policy developments relevant to WCC priorities, including peace and security, disarmament, human rights, sustainable development, and climate justice.
• Develop and implement advocacy strategies that amplify the ecumenical voice on global justice issues.
• Build and maintain relationships with UN agencies, diplomatic missions, multilateral/intergovernmental institutions, and civil society partners in New York and Washington DC.
• Serve as liaison to the National Council of Churches in the USA (NCCUSA) and other ecumenical and interfaith partners in the USA.
• Facilitate the engagement of WCC member churches and partners in advocacy initiatives, and promote cooperation between the UN and WCC member churches and ecumenical partners in country contexts.
• Prepare reports, policy briefs, and communication materials for internal and external audiences.
• Coordinate events, consultations, and delegations to the UN and other policy spaces.

Qualifications and special requirements: 
• Advanced university degree in international relations, law, political science, theology, or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in advocacy, policy engagement, or multilateral diplomacy, preferably within an ecumenical or faith-based context.
• Strong understanding of the UN system and global policy processes.
• Excellent communication, networking, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to work in a multicultural and ecumenical environment.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of other languages (especially Spanish or French) an advantage.
• Willingness to travel regularly within the USA and occasionally internationally.

The position is open to U.S. citizens or holders of valid work permits (WCC cannot provide visa sponsorship).

Terms of Employment:
• Full-time position based in New York.
• Initial contract of 3 years, renewable subject to performance and funding.
