The Department of Performing Arts at Prairie View A&M University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of the Practice in Choral Music beginning Fall 2026. We seek an accomplished conductor, educator, and collaborative musician committed to excellence in undergraduate music education, student recruitment, and the artistic development of the University's choral program.

The salary isdeterminedin accordance withthe University's compensation structure and will becommensuratewith the candidates' education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach the undergraduate curricular choir and other courses as assigned and appropriate to the candidate's qualifications and departmental needs.
  • Conduct and administer the University's curricular choral ensemble(s).
  • Collaborate with the Artist-in-Residence to provide rehearsal continuity, musical preparation, and logistical support for the Sesquicentennial Celebration Choir and other special university performances.
  • Recruit and retain outstanding students through active engagement with high schools, churches, community organizations, and professional networks.
  • Develop a positive, student-centered choral culture that supports artistic excellence and student success.
  • Coordinate music preparation, auditions, and ensemble administration as assigned.
  • Participate in curriculum development, assessment, student advising, recruitment, and departmental service.
  • Contribute to the artistic and academic mission of the Department of Performing Arts and Prairie View A&M University.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Choral Conducting, Choral Music Education, or a closely related field
    from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated excellence as a conductor and educator.
  • Evidence of successful teaching and ensemble leadership at the collegiate and/or
    professional level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student recruitment, mentorship, and academic success.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective teaching, communication, and student mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
  • Proficiency with instructional technologies, learning management systems, music notation software, and digital communication platforms.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining a collaborative and student-centered approach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Choral Conducting, Choral Music Education, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated proficiency as a collaborative pianist sufficient to rehearse and accompany choral ensembles.
  • Experience working at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or with various student populations.
  • Experience recruiting and retaining students for collegiate choral programs.
  • Experience building or revitalizing collegiate choral ensembles.
