How do choir members typically collaborate with the conductor and fellow singers during rehearsals and performances?

Choir members work closely with the conductor, who guides them through musical interpretation, timing, and dynamics during rehearsals and performances. Effective communication and active listening are essential, as singers must blend their voices with others and respond to real-time feedback. Collaboration often involves sectional rehearsals, where singers practice with others in their vocal range, as well as full ensemble rehearsals. Building camaraderie and mutual support within the choir helps create a cohesive and harmonious performance.

What is the difference between Choir Member vs Vocalist?

AspectChoir MemberVocalist
Required CredentialsBasic musical training, singing abilityAdvanced vocal training, possibly professional singing experience
Work EnvironmentChoral groups, churches, community ensemblesSolo performances, bands, recording studios
Employer & Industry UsageReligious, educational, community organizationsMusic industry, entertainment, recording

While both choir members and vocalists sing, choir members typically participate in group performances within organized ensembles, often with less emphasis on solo work. Vocalists may perform solo or as part of various musical settings, often requiring more advanced vocal skills. The roles overlap in musical training and environment but differ mainly in scope and performance style.

What are choir members?

Choir members are individuals who sing together as part of a group, typically performing choral music in settings such as churches, schools, or community organizations. They may sing different vocal parts—soprano, alto, tenor, or bass—to create harmonized pieces. Choir members often rehearse regularly, learn new music, and participate in performances or services. Their role is essential in creating a unified and expressive musical experience for audiences. Being a choir member also fosters teamwork, discipline, and a love of music.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Choir Member, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Choir Member, you need strong vocal ability, music reading skills, and a basic understanding of music theory, often gained through choir experience or formal training. Familiarity with rehearsal techniques, choral sheet music, and sometimes digital music learning tools is common in this role. Teamwork, discipline, and attentive listening are crucial soft skills that help blend voices and follow the conductor's direction. These skills ensure cohesive performances, musical accuracy, and a positive contribution to the ensemble's overall sound.

Job description

Audition Notice: The Riverside Choir is hearing auditions for the Sub List in all voice parts, and limited SAB position openings.

Description and pay-scale:

The Riverside Choir is a diverse semi-professional group of 40+ singers, ranging in ability from volunteer and avocational to fully professional, and offers various positions on a sliding scale of compensation of $80-$150/service. A high level of musicianship, experience, confidence, sense of pitch, and proficient music reading is expected. The ability to blend chorally and sing comfortably with limited vibrato is essential. The choir sings the full range of traditional choral repertoire from classical composers such as Mendelssohn, Handel, and Howells, to modern composers and African-American spirituals. There are occasional solo opportunities.

Schedule:

The usual Sunday schedule is a 9:00am rehearsal for an 11:00am service, every week from mid-September to mid-June, with additional services around Christmas and Easter. Major holiday attendance is expected. There is a once monthly Thursday evening rehearsal, and occasional other weeknight rehearsals as required. Small groups on a rotating basis sing through the summer months. “Music at Riverside” presents 2-3 choral concerts per season.

Audition:

To be considered for an audition, submit a resume (include choral/ensemble experience), links to audio/video samples, and availability for an audition. Upon review of your materials, we will reach out if you have been selected for a live audition.
