The Episcopal Center for Children (ECC) is a private, nonprofit, non-denominational day treatment facility for emotionally troubled children and their families from the greater Washington, DC area. The program is designed for children between the ages of 5 to 14 years, grades K - 8. The goal of treatment, therapeutic milieu, and individualized special education programming is to empower each child to function productively within his/her family and the community, to return to his/her public school, and have a real opportunity for a successful, emotionally healthy, and productive future. Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

Dedicated One-to-One Student Aide supports students with emotional challenges in our educational and therapeutic environment. The position assists the student one on one in the classroom with all instructional material and helps the student with needs outside of the classroom but related to achieving needed skills and requirements for succeeding in school. The Dedicated One-to-One Aide assist the Center staff with providing specialized instruction, and therapeutic and related services for children ages 5 to 14.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in the instruction of an individual student with disabilities including assistance in the laboratories, washrooms, playgrounds, gymnasiums, lunchrooms, libraries, field trips and all other educational settings as determined by the classroom teacher and IEP team
  • Confer with Director of Education, Director of Clinical Services and Director of School Culture to derive information about the designated student's therapeutic and educational background.
  • Collaborate with lead teacher and student's social worker in the planning and management of a student's behaviors and educational needs.
  • Consult with parents, when appropriate, with a view to obtain additional student information that may be needed to ensure the success of an implemented special education program.
  • Work with student on a one-on-one basis by providing them with undivided attention.
  • Implement behavioral plans to meet students' needs for social, educational, cognitive, mental and physical development.
  • Observe students for signs of deterioration or improvement and document and report either/both.
  • Maintain safety of all students.
  • De-escalate designated student and use counseling skills.
  • Regularly collect data to track designated student's behavioral progress
  • Follow Functional Communication Protocols and Behavior Protocols to respond to designated student's behavior appropriately and successfully.
  • Provide support for lead teacher, special education service providers (speech, PT, OT), to address designated student's needs in the classroom.
  • Assist with identifying IEP goals, progress summaries and progress reports for designated student.
  • Support the creation of a classroom culture and environment that develops and nurtures the emotional, cognitive and social abilities of the students.
  • Engage parents and families in their student's learning, and acting as an ambassador for the school in the community.
  • Contribute productively to the school as a whole.
  • Attend and participate in school events outside of regular school hours.
  • Responsible for guiding any independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up by the classroom teacher

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university preferred; or completion of 48 credit hours of study from an accredited college/university; or possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent and a passing score of 461 or higher on the ETS ParaPro Assessment examination; or possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent and 2 years of direct experience.
  • Knowledge early childhood education/human development.
  • Experience working in special education and/or with individuals with severe behavioral and academic issues.
  • Knowledge of behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to work independently.
  • Adherence to high level of professional and ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated ability, skill, and experience in working with diverse populations.
  • Good relationship building skills and ability to build a strong rapport with students.
