Library Assistant I

The Library Assistant I is responsible for supporting the Sevier County Library System by assisting with the daily operations and public services of the library across multiple locations. Primary responsibilities include checking library materials in and out, re-shelving books, assisting with overdue notices, registering new patrons, and processing incoming and outgoing materials. The position also involves answering reference questions, providing readers advise, supporting computer and technology use, assisting with children's programming, and leading teen activities.

Job performance for this position will be evaluated by the Director of Library Services based on the accuracy and efficiency of assigned duties, level of support for library operations and programming, quality of patron services, and ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and the public. Job activities are also subject to annual audits.

Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Tennessee driver's license and to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
  • Ability to pass a physical and drug screen administered through a licensed physician.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as scheduled and travel between library locations as needed.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a public library or similar public service environment.

Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of Sevier County Library System policies and procedures, including circulation processes and services.
  • Ability to make timely and appropriate decisions within established policies and procedures, using sound judgment and discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately perform basic accounting/bookkeeping transactions in a consistent and organized manner.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and complete assignments efficiently.
  • Ability to remain informed about developments and best practices in library services and apply them effectively on the job.

  • Proficiency in performing general administrative duties, including filing, data entry, and recordkeeping.

  • Ability to present engaging story time sessions and assist in delivering age-appropriate educational programming for children and youth.
  • Skill in the use of modern office equipment, library automation systems, and standard computer software applications such as Microsoft Office.

Work Environment:
