What is a chief?

Chiefs in an organization are senior executives responsible for leading key departments or functions, such as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and Chief Operating Officer (COO). They play a critical role in setting strategy, making high-level decisions, and ensuring the alignment of their departments with the company's overall goals. Chiefs typically report to the board of directors or the company's owner and are instrumental in driving organizational success. Their responsibilities vary depending on their specific title and the size of the organization.

How does a chief collaborate with other executives and departments to drive organizational success?

A Chief, such as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Chief Operating Officer (COO), works closely with other executives and department heads to align strategies and ensure that all parts of the organization are working towards shared goals. Regular cross-functional meetings, strategic planning sessions, and open channels of communication are key methods used to foster collaboration. Chiefs often act as a bridge between the board of directors and operational teams, providing leadership, resolving conflicts, and ensuring resources are allocated effectively. This collaborative approach is essential for navigating complex challenges and driving sustainable growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Executive Officer, you need strategic vision, leadership experience, and a strong foundation in business management, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA. CEOs typically utilize enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial management tools, and may hold certifications in executive leadership. Outstanding communication, decision-making, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for inspiring teams and navigating complex challenges. About the North Carolina Aquarium Society

The North Carolina Aquarium Society is the nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the mission of the North Carolina Aquariums and Jennetteโ€™s Pier: to inspire appreciation and conservation of aquatic environments. The Society generates private funds to advance the Aquariums and enhance the aquarium experience for all visitors. The private support raised by the Society ensures the Aquariums can implement their priorities โ€“ opening new exhibits, nurturing aquatic life, and facilitating educational programs and conservation research.

The North Carolina Aquariums connect people of all ages with the wonders of nature and aquatic wildlife. As part of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, the Aquariums are committed to inspiring appreciation, advancing education, and promoting the conservation of our aquatic environments.

Each year, these efforts support more than 1.3 million visitors, connecting people of all ages to the importance of aquatic science and environmental stewardship.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Reporting to the President and CEO, the ideal CFO will be an experienced leader with a passion for NCASโ€™ mission and a strong track record of managing the financial aspects of a complex organization.

Responsibilities include reporting, analysis, forecasting, and compliance. This leader also oversees human resources, information technology, operations, treasury management, purchasing, and risk management.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO, members of the senior leadership team and the Board of Directors on the financial performance, planning, and opportunities of the overall organization.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor financial strategies, plans and forecasting models in conjunction with leadership and the Board.
  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Acceptable Accounting Principles standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the organizationโ€™s annual budget process.
  • Manage all financial aspects of the ongoing relationship with the State of North Carolina.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements.
  • Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls and financial management policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and regularly with the Board Finance and Audit, Investment, and Executive Committees, and present to the full Board at meetings and events.
  • Bachelorโ€™s or advanced degree from four-year college or university in business, accounting or finance; or six to eight years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Candidate Profile

They will have demonstrated experience managing diverse lines of revenue and a deep understanding of nonprofit finance.

A Skilled Communicator

A highly articulate and deft communicator, the CFO will bring the ability to simply and accurately convey the organizationโ€™s intricate financials to all relevant stakeholders including the CEO, Board of Directors, State of North Carolina, and donors, among others. This leader will clearly, and in a timely manner, communicate NCASโ€™ successes and opportunities in written and verbal formats and in both formal and informal situations. They will be skilled at translating financial concepts into accessible language and presenting transparently in order to build trust with all constituents.

Collaborative Organizational Leader

The CFO will have strong executive presence, engender confidence, and lead with intentionality. This leader will be skilled at quickly establishing rapport and cultivating relationships across all levels of the organization. They will exhibit strong management skills including the ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports, foster trust and collaboration among team members, empower managers and leaders, develop systems of accountability, and possess the ability to manage change with flexibility and poise.
