Job Summary

As the Sous Chef in a healthcare environment, you will play a key role in delivering safe, nutritious, and high-quality meals that support patient care and enhance the dining experience for residents, patients, staff, and visitors. You will assist in overseeing the daily operations of the Culinary Department, ensuring compliance with dietary guidelines, sanitation standards, and facility policies. This role includes hands-on food preparation, coaching culinary staff, and contributing to menu development that meets both clinical requirements and customer satisfaction goals. You will work closely with the Executive Chef/Chef to support operational excellence while maintaining a patient-first approach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports the Executive Chef in managing cost controls, purchasing, and inventory to meet budget expectations while maintaining quality standards.
  • Assists in planning and creating menus that align with clinical nutrition needs, cultural preferences, and healthcare regulatory standards.
  • Prepares, cooks, and oversees production of meals for patients, residents, and retail/café service, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and safe food handling.
  • Produces and executes catering events for departmental meetings, leadership functions, and special events within the facility.
  • Helps implement new culinary programs, wellness initiatives, and health-focused menu offerings in partnership with company culinary and marketing teams.
  • Provides guidance and support to hourly associates, fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensures HACCP, ServSafe, and healthcare sanitation practices are followed at all times.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A.S. degree in Culinary Arts or equivalent professional experience
  • Progressive culinary or kitchen leadership experience; healthcare or institutional cooking experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with high-volume or complex foodservice operations
  • Catering or special event production experience is a plus
  • Strong understanding of therapeutic diets, batch cooking, and food safety in a healthcare setting
  • Knowledge of current foodservice trends with an emphasis on nutrition, quality, presentation, cost control, and patient satisfaction
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, email, and internet-based systems
  • Willingness to participate in patient and client satisfaction initiatives
  • ServSafe certification highly desirable
