What is a change catalyst?

Change Catalysts are professionals who drive and facilitate organizational transformation by inspiring, guiding, and supporting individuals and teams through change processes. They help identify areas needing improvement, communicate the vision for change, and overcome resistance by engaging stakeholders. Change Catalysts use their leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills to ensure that new strategies, technologies, or processes are successfully implemented, leading to lasting positive outcomes for the organization.

How does a change catalyst typically collaborate with stakeholders across different departments during a transformation initiative?

As a Change Catalyst, you’ll frequently collaborate with stakeholders from various departments to ensure successful adoption of new processes or strategies. This often involves facilitating cross-functional workshops, gathering feedback, and aligning the goals of diverse teams. You’ll serve as a communication bridge, helping to address concerns, share best practices, and create a sense of shared ownership. Building trust and fostering open dialogue are essential to overcoming resistance and ensuring a smooth transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a change catalyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Change Catalyst, you need expertise in organizational development, project management, and a strong understanding of change management principles, typically supported by relevant certifications such as Prosci or Change Management Professional (CMP). Familiarity with tools like change management software, communication platforms, and data analytics systems is crucial for planning and tracking initiatives. Exceptional communication, influence, and resilience are vital soft skills for inspiring stakeholders and overcoming resistance. These abilities are essential for successfully guiding organizations through transformation and ensuring long-term adoption of new processes or cultures.

Job description

Director, Organizational Development & Effectiveness

New York, New York; Salt Lake City, Utah

Your work will change lives. Including your own.

The impact you’ll make:

At Recursion, we are decoding biology to radically improve lives. To accelerate our mission, we need exceptional people doing the best work of their careers in an environment that is inclusive, innovative, and purpose-driven.

This role is a blend of systems thinker, coach, designer, change catalyst, and grounded practitioner. The right person for this role has advised on and led transformation from within an organization, believes in fit-for-purpose organizational design and exceptional employee experiences as drivers of business impact, and can turn workforce insights and future signals into tangible organizational prototypes that spark real change. They quickly understand what makes an organization unique — and know how to pull the right structural, cultural, and talent levers to make change real and successful.

In this role, you will:

  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on team and organizational dynamics, diagnosing organizational health and effectiveness challenges, and identifying accelerants
  • Advise leaders on their organizational design, team structures and workflows to meet business needs, establishing design principles, governance and change processes to support agility, consistency and transparency across functions
  • Partner with the People Experience team to design, interpret, and socialize organizational health metrics (e.g., spans/layers, attrition, internal mobility, etc.) to inform interventions
  • Partner with the Talent Acquisition team on strategic workforce planning, including identifying critical capabilities, gaps, and succession needs
  • Strengthen Recursion’s leaders and leadership bench by incorporating our leadership expectations throughout the employee lifecycle - from hiring to development to performance assessment and career pathing.
  • Own and evolve performance management by coaching senior leaders (1:1 and group), refining talent review and succession planning processes and actions, and building cross functional communities of leadership best practice
The Team You Will Join

Recursion’s People Team creates the conditions to enable and sustain high-performing teams, and helps employees do the best work of their careers. We are talent scouts and partners, creating experiences and outcomes that support our employees and drive business success. We focus on scalable solutions that add value across geographies, while providing individual advisory partnership and support where it matters most. With a people + data approach, we ensure Recursion has the people, culture, and operating dynamics to accelerate drug discovery and get medicines to patients faster.

The Experience You’ll Need

We’re looking for a proactive, curious operator with a clear passion for organizational effectiveness, developing leaders, and improving the experience of work. Ideally you bring experience working in a biotech, pharma or scientific research-driven environment, and have the expertise in:

  • Applying systems thinking to diagnose organizational health and design interventions that address root causes
  • Partnering effectively with scientists, engineers, and business leaders to bridge disciplines and align diverse professional cultures
  • Coaching senior technical and organizational leaders to improve or sustain their impact
  • Leading large-scale organizational change and cultural transformation initiatives
  • Influencing senior leaders, constructively challenge perspectives, and build trusted executive relationships
  • Translating engagement data, performance metrics, and qualitative feedback into clear insights and actionable executive recommendations
  • Communicating complex ideas with clarity and precision in both written and verbal formats
  • Managing a Slack-intensive operating environment
  • Even better if you have a Master’s or PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Organizational Behavior, or a related field
Working Location & Compensation

This is an office-based, hybrid position at either our New York City, New York, office or our HQ in Salt Lake City, Utah. Employees are expected to work in the office at least 50% of the time.

At Recursion, we believe that every employee should be compensated fairly. Based on the skill and level of experience required for this role, the estimated current annual base range for this role is $192,500 to $250,800 (USD). You will also be eligible for an annual bonus and equity compensation, as well as a comprehensive benefits package.

The Values We Hope You Share
  • We act boldly with integrity. We are unconstrained in our thinking, take calculated risks, and push boundaries, but never at the expense of ethics, science, or trust.
  • We care deeply and engage directly. Caring means holding a deep sense of responsibility and respect - showing up, speaking honestly, and taking action.
  • We learn actively and adapt rapidly. Progress comes from doing. We experiment, test, and refine, embracing iteration over perfection.
  • We move with urgency because patients are waiting. Speed isn’t about rushing but about moving the needle every day.
  • We take ownership and accountability. Through ownership and accountability, we enable trust and autonomy—leaders take accountability for decisive action, and teams own outcomes together.
  • We are One Recursion. True cross-functional collaboration is about trust, clarity, humility, and impact. Through sharing, we can be greater than the sum of our individual capabilities.

Our values underpin the employee experience at Recursion. They are the character and personality of the company demonstrated through how we communicate, support one another, spend our time, make decisions, and celebrate collectively.
